“Exactly,” said Dr. Constantine. “She finds out that she has dropped the handkerchief and immediately takes steps to conceal her Christian name.”
“How fast you go! You arrive at a conclusion much sooner than I would permit myself to do.”
“Is there any other alternative?”
‘Certainly there is (конечно есть). Suppose, for instance, that you have committed a crime (предположим, например, что вы совершили преступление) and wish to cast the blame for it on someone else (и хотите свалить вину /за него/ на кого-нибудь другого; to cast —
“But in such a case (но в таком случае),” objected the doctor (возразил доктор), “the person indicated, being innocent (указанная особа, будучи невиновной), would not take steps to conceal her identity (не стала бы предпринимать меры, чтобы скрыть свою личность).”

‘Certainly there is. Suppose, for instance, that you have committed a crime and wish to cast the blame for it on someone else. Well, there is on the train a certain person connected intimately with the Armstrong family — a woman. Suppose, then, that you leave there a handkerchief belonging to that woman. She will be questioned, her connection with the Armstrong family will be brought out — et voil`a: motive — and an incriminating article of evidence.”
“But in such a case,” objected the doctor, “the person indicated, being innocent, would not take steps to conceal her identity.”
“Ah, really (правда)? That is what you think (вы так думаете)? That is, truly, the opinion of the police court (верно, это ход мыслей: «мнение» суда /присяжных/). But I know human nature, my friend (но я знаю человеческую природу, мой друг), and I tell you that (и вот что я вам скажу), suddenly confronted with the possibility (внезапно столкнувшись с возможностью; to confront — стоять против; столкнуться) of being tried for murder (быть судимым за убийство; to try — пытаться, стараться; судить, привлекать к судебной ответственности), the most innocent person will lose his head and do the most absurd things (/даже/ самый невинный человек потеряет голову и будет делать самые нелепые вещи). No, no, the grease spot and the changed label do not prove guilt (нет, жирное пятно и измененный ярлык /на чемодане/ не доказывают вины) — they only prove that the Countess Andrenyi is anxious for some reason to conceal her identity (они только доказывают, что графиня Андрени страстно стремится по какой-то причине скрыть свою личность; anxious — беспокоящийся; страстно желающий /чего-либо/).”
“What do you think her connection with the Armstrong family can be (как вы думаете, какой может быть ее связь с семьей Армстронгов)? She has never been in America, she says (она не бывала в Америке, как она говорит).”

“Exactly, and she speaks English with a foreign accent, and she has a very foreign appearance which she exaggerates. But it should not be difficult to guess who she is. I mentioned just now the name of Mrs. Armstrong’s mother. It was ‘Linda Arden,’ and she was a very celebrated actress — among other things a Shakespearean actress. Think of As You Like It, with the Forest of Arden and Rosalind. It was there she got the inspiration for her acting name.
‘Linda Arden,’ the name by which she was known all over the world (Линда Арден — это имя, под которым она была известна по всему миру), was not her real name (не было ее настоящим именем). It may have been Goldenberg (/фамилия ее/ могла быть Гольденберг); it is quite likely that she had Central European blood in her veins (вполне вероятно, что в ее венах текла центрально-европейская кровь) — a strain of Jewish, perhaps (возможно, небольшое количество еврейской /крови/; strain — происхождение, род; черточка, элемент, небольшое количество). Many nationalities drift to America (/представители/ многих национальностей перебрались в Америку; to drift — относить или гнать /ветром, течением/; относиться, перемещаться /по ветру, течению/). I suggest to you, gentlemen, that that young sister of Mrs. Armstrong’s (я предположу, господа, что та младшая сестра миссис Армстронг), little more than a child at the time of the tragedy (немногим больше чем ребенок = почти ребенок во время трагедии), was Helena Goldenberg, the younger daughter of Linda Arden (была Еленой Гольденберг, младшей дочерью Линды Арден), and that she married Count Andrenyi when he was an attach'e in Washington (и что она вышла замуж за графа Андрени, когда он служил атташе в Вашингтоне).”
