The children grouped themselves all round, fluttering their big fans and whispering to each other, and Don Pedro and the Grand Inquisitor stood laughing at the entrance. Even the Duchess — the Camerera-Mayor as she was called — a thin, hard-featured woman with a yellow ruff did not look quite so bad-tempered as usual, and something like a chill smile flitted across her wrinkled face and twitched her thin bloodless lips.
It certainly was a marvellous bullfight (бой быков был действительно восхитительный), and much nicer (и гораздо красивее/изящнее), the Infanta thought (думала Инфанта; to think (thought)), than the real bull-fight (чем настоящий бой быков) that she had been brought to see at Seville (на который ее возили посмотреть в Севилью; to bring (brought) — приносить; приводить, привозить), on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of Parma to her father (по случаю визита Герцога Пармского к ее отцу). It certainly was a marvellous bullfight, and much nicer, the Infanta thought, than the real bull-fight that she had been brought to see at Seville, on the occasion of the visit of the Duke of Parma to her father. Some of the boys pranced about on richly-caparisoned hobby-horses brandishing long javelins with gay streamers of bright ribands attached to them; others went on foot waving their scarlet cloaks before the bull, and vaulting lightly over the barrier when he charged them; and as for the bull himself he was just like a live bull, though he was only made of wicker-work and stretched hide, and sometimes insisted on running round the arena on his hind legs, which no live bull ever dreams of doing.
He made a splendid fight of it too (и он оказывал замечательное: «отличное» сопротивление /тореадорам/; to make a fight of it — оказывать сопротивление, fight — бой, битва), and the children got so excited (и дети настолько возбудились/взволновались; to get (got), to excite — возбуждать, волновать) that they stood up upon the benches (что они повставали на скамейки; to stand (stood)), and waved their lace handkerchiefs (и размахивали своим кружевными /носовыми/ платками) and cried out (и выкрикивали): Bravo toro (браво, торо; toro — торо, бык /особ. для боя быков/)! Bravo toro! just as sensibly (так же разумно) as if they had been grown-up people (как взрослые: «как если бы они были выросшими/взрослыми людьми»; to grow (grew, grown), grown-up — взрослый). At last, however, after a prolonged combat (наконец, однако, после длительной борьбы; combat — бой, конфликт, поединок), during which several of the hobby-horses (во время которой несколько игрушечных лошадок) were gored through and through (были несколько раз: «снова и снова/основательно» пронзены /рогами быка/; to gore — бодать, забодать), and their riders dismounted (и их седоки: «всадники» были сброшены; to dismount — сходить; выбивать из седла), the young Count of Tierra-Nueva (молодой граф Тьера-Нуэва) brought the bull to his knees (заставил быка встать на колени; to bring (brought), to bring smb. to his knees — поставить кого-либо на колени), and having obtained permission from the Infanta (и, получив разрешение Инфанты) to give the coup de gr^ace (нанести смертельный/решающий удар; coup de gr^ace — фр. смертельный удар, прекращающий страдания и нанесенный из милосердия), he plunged his wooden sword (он вонзил: «погрузил» свой деревянный меч; to plunge — нырять; погружать, окунать) into the neck of the animal (в шею животного) with such violence (с такой силой; violence — насилие; сила, ярость) that the head came right off (что голова тотчас оторвалась; to come (came, come) off — отрываться /о пуговицах и т.п./) and disclosed the laughing face (и показалось смеющееся лицо; to disclose — раскрывать, открывать) of little Monsieur de Lorraine (маленького месье де Лоррэна), the son of the French Ambassador at Madrid (сына французского Посла в Мадриде).

The arena was then cleared amidst much applause, and the dead hobby-horses dragged solemnly away by two Moorish pages in yellow and black liveries, and after a short interlude, during which a French posture-master performed upon the tight rope, some Italian puppets appeared in the semi-classical tragedy of Sophonisba on the stage of a small theatre that had been built up for the purpose.
They acted so well (они играли настолько хорошо), and their gestures were so extremely natural (и их жесты/телодвижения были настолько чрезвычайно натуральными/естественными), that at the close of the play (что в самом конце представления; close — конец, завершение; play — игра; пьеса, драма) the eyes of the Infanta were quite dim with tears (глаза Инфанты совсем затуманились от слез; dim — тусклый, неясный, мутный). Indeed some of the children really cried (и в самом деле, некоторые дети действительно расплакались), and had to be comforted with sweetmeats (и их даже пришлось успокаивать конфетами; to comfort — утешать, успокаивать), and the Grand Inquisitor himself was so affected (и сам Великий Инквизитор был настолько поражен/взволнован; to affect — воздействовать, волновать) that he could not help saying to Don Pedro (что не смог сдержаться и не сказать Дону Педро; to help — помогать, cannot help doing smth. — быть не в состоянии удержаться от чего-либо) that it seemed to him intolerable (что это казалось ему невыносимым) that things made simply out of wood (что создания/существа, просто изготовленные из дерева) and coloured wax (и окрашенного/разноцветного воска), and worked mechanically by wires (и которые механически двигались: «приводились в движение» с помощью проволоки; to work — работать; приводить в движение), should be so unhappy (могут быть настолько несчастны) and meet with such terrible misfortunes (и испытывать такие ужасные беды/неудачи; to meet — встречать; испытывать /что-либо/, подвергаться /чему-либо/).

An African juggler followed (затем следовал африканский жонглер/фокусник), who brought in a large flat basket (который принес с собой: «внес» большую плоскую корзину; to bring (brought)) covered with a red cloth (покрытую красной тканью), and having placed it in the centre of the arena (и, расположив ее в самом центре арены), he took from his turban (он достал из своего тюрбана/чалмы; to take (took, taken)) a curious reed pipe (чудную тростниковую трубку; curious — любознательный; странный, чудной), and blew through it (и подул в нее = стал играть на ней; to blow (blew, blown)). In a few moments (через несколько мгновений) the cloth began to move (ткань начала двигаться), and as the pipe grew shriller and shriller (и /звуки/ трубки становились все более резкими и пронзительными; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться) two green and gold snakes (две зеленых с золотым змеи) put out their strange wedge-shaped heads (высунули свои странные клиновидные головы; shape — форма, очертание, shaped — имеющий какую-либо форму) and rose slowly up (и стали медленно подниматься; to rise (rose, risen)), swaying to and fro with the music (качаясь из стороны в сторону под музыку; to sway — качаться) as a plant sways in the water (подобно растению, что качается в воде).
