An African juggler followed, who brought in a large flat basket covered with a red cloth, and having placed it in the centre of the arena, he took from his turban a curious reed pipe, and blew through it. In a few moments the cloth began to move, and as the pipe grew shriller and shriller two green and gold snakes put out their strange wedge-shaped heads and rose slowly up, swaying to and fro with the music as a plant sways in the water.

The children, however, were rather frightened (дети однако были довольно напуганы) at their spotted hoods (их пятнистыми капюшонами; spot — пятно, пятнышко) and quick darting tongues (и быстрыми жалящими языками; to dart —

рвануться, метнуться; пронзать), and were much more pleased (и были гораздо более довольны) when the juggler made (когда фокусник заставил; to make (made) — делать; заставлять) a tiny orange-tree grow out of the sand (крохотное апельсиновое дерево вырасти из песка) and bear pretty white blossoms (и зацвести прекрасными белыми цветами; to bear blossom — цвести, blossom — цвет, цветок) and clusters of real fruit (и /покрыться/ гроздями настоящих плодов); and when he took the fan (а когда он взял веер) of the little daughter of the Marquess de Las-Torres (у маленькой дочери маркиза де Лас-Торрес), and changed it into a blue bird (и превратил его в синюю птичку; to change — менять; превращать) that flew all round the pavilion and sang (которая летала по всему павильону и пела; to fly (flew, flown) — летать, to sing (sang, sing) — петь), their delight (их восторгу/восхищению) and amazement (и изумлению/удивлению) knew no bounds (не было пределов: «восторг и удивление не знали границ»; bound — граница, предел, to know (knew, known)).

The children, however, were rather frightened at their spotted hoods and quick darting tongues, and were much more pleased when the juggler made a tiny orange-tree grow out of the sand and bear pretty white blossoms and clusters of real fruit; and when he took the fan of the little daughter of the Marquess de Las-Torres, and changed it into a blue bird that flew all round the pavilion and sang, their delight and amazement knew no bounds.

The solemn minuet, too (серьезный/торжественный менуэт, тоже), performed by the dancing boys (исполненный маленькими танцорами: «танцующими мальчиками») from the church of Nuestra Se~nora Del Pilar (из церкви Nuestra Se~nora Del Pilar: «девы Марии Пиларской = стоящей на колонне»; Nuestra Se~nora Del Pilar — (исп.) согласно легенде, Святая Дева Мария явилась апостолу Иакову, когда тот проповедовал в Испании, стоящей на вершине колонны, которую держали ангелы; pillar — столб, колонна), was charming (был очаровательным).

The Infanta had never before seen (Инфанта никогда раньше не видела) this wonderful ceremony (этой удивительной церемонии) which takes place every year at May-time (которая проходит каждый год, в мае; to take place — случаться, происходить, time — время; сезон, пора) in front of the high altar of the Virgin (перед высоким алтарем Пресвятой Девы), and in her honour (в ее честь); and indeed none of the royal family of Spain (и еще никто из царской семьи Испании) had entered the great cathedral of Saragossa (не входил в большой собор в Сарагосе) since a mad priest (с тех самых пор, как сумасшедший священник), supposed by many (как многие предполагали; to suppose — полагать, думать, считать) to have been in the pay of Elizabeth of England (оплачивался /королевой/ Елизаветой Английской; pay — плата, зарплата, денежное довольствие), had tried to administer a poisoned wafer (вручить /на Причастии/ отравленную облатку; to administer — управлять; применять, давать /лекарство/; wafer — вафля; облатка — небольшая круглая лепешка из прессованного пресного теста, употр. для причащения по католическому и протестантскому обряду) to the Prince of the Asturias (Принцу Астурии /провинция Испании/).

The solemn minuet, too, performed by the dancing boys from the church of Nuestra Se~nora Del Pilar, was charming.
