`When the Emperor saw me (когда Император увидел меня; to see (saw, seen)) he frowned (он нахмурился/нахмурил брови), and said to me, "What is thy name (как тебя зовут: «какое твое имя»)? Knowest thou not (разве ты не знаешь; knowest thou not = don’t you know) that I am Emperor of this city (что я — Император этого города)?" But I made him no answer (но я не ответила ему; to make (made)).

`The young Emperor was stretched on a couch of dyed lion skins, and a gerfalcon perched upon his wrist. Behind him stood a brass-turbaned Nubian, naked down to the waist, and with heavy earrings in his split ears. On a table by the side of the couch lay a mighty scimitar of steel.

`When the Emperor saw me he frowned, and said to me, "What is thy name? Knowest thou not that I am Emperor of this city?" But I made him no answer.

`He pointed with his finger (он

The man fell sprawling on the floor (человек /нубиец/ упал, растянувшись, на пол; to sprawl — развалиться; растянуться), and, when he rose up (и, когда он поднялся; to rise (rose, risen)), his teeth chattered with terror (его зубы стучали от ужаса; to chatter — болтать; стучать, щелкать /зубами/) and he hid himself behind the couch (и он спрятался позади ложа /Императора/; to hide (hid, hidden)).

`The Emperor leapt to his feet (Император вскочил на ноги; to leap (leapt, leaped) — прыгать, скакать), and taking a lance from a stand of arms (и взяв пику/копье из стойки с оружием), he threw it at me (он бросил его в меня; to throw (threw, thrown)). I caught it in its flight (я поймала его в полете), and brake the shaft into two pieces (и разломила древко на две части; to break (broke, уст.brake, broken)). He shot at me with an arrow (он выпустил в меня стрелу; to shoot (shot) — стрелять, вести огонь), but I held up my hands (но я подняла свои руки; to hold (held)) and it stopped in mid-air (и остановила ее в воздухе; mid-air — воздушное пространство, воздух). Then he drew a dagger (затем он вытащил кинжал; to draw (drew, drawn) — тащить, волочить) from a belt of white leather (из-за пояса из белой кожи), and stabbed the Nubian in the throat (и заколол нубийца в горло; to stab — наносить удар ножом; вонзать нож, колоть ножом) lest the slave should tell of his dishonour (для того, чтобы раб не рассказал о его бесчестье/позоре; honour — честь, благородство). The man writhed (человек = раб корчился) like a trampled snake (как раздавленная змея; to trample — топтать, растаптывать), and a red foam bubbled (и красная пена пошла пузырями; bubble — пузырек /воздуха или газа/, to bubble — пузыриться, покрываться пузырями) from his lips (с его губ).

`As soon as he was dead the Emperor turned to me, and when he had wiped away the bright sweat from his brow with a little napkin of purfled and purple silk, he said to me, `Art thou a prophet, that I may not harm thee, or the son of a prophet that I can do thee no hurt? I pray thee leave my city to-night, for while thou art in it I am no longer its lord."

`And I answered him (и я ответила ему), "I will go (я уйду) for half of thy treasure (за половину = если получу половину твоих сокровищ). Give me half of thy treasure (отдай мне половину твоих сокровищ), and I will go away (и я уйду прочь)."

`He took me by the hand (он взял меня за руку), and led me out into the garden (и вывел меня из /беседки/ в сад). When the captain of the guard saw me (когда начальник стражи увидел меня; to see (saw, seen)), he wondered (он поразился; to wonder — интересоваться; изумляться). When the eunuchs saw me (когда евнухи увидели меня), their knees shook (их колени затряслись; to shake (shook, shaken) — трясти, сотрясать) and they fell upon the ground in fear (и они упали ниц: «на землю» в страхе; to fall (fell, fallen)).

`And I answered him, "I will go for half of thy treasure. Give me half of thy treasure, and I will go away."

`He took me by the hand, and led me out into the garden. When the captain of the guard saw me, he wondered. When the eunuchs saw me, their knees shook and they fell upon the ground in fear.

`There is a chamber in the palace (во дворце есть зал) that has eight walls (с восьмью стенами) of red porphyry (из красного порфира), and a brass-scaled ceiling (и потолок, покрытый тонкими пластинами из желтой меди/латуни; scale — чешуя, чешуйка; тонкая металлическая пластинка) hung with lamps (и свисающими лампами; to hang (hung, hanged)). The Emperor touched one of the walls (Император коснулся одной из стен) and it opened (и она распахнулась/открылась), and we passed down a corridor (и мы пошли по коридору) that was lit with many torches (который был освещен множеством факелов; to light (lit, lighted) — зажигать; освещать). In niches upon each side (в нишах по каждой стороне) stood great wine-jars (стояли огромные сосуды для вина) filled to the brim (наполненные до краев) with silver pieces (серебряными монетами; piece — кусок, часть; монета). When we reached the centre of the corridor (когда мы дошли до середины/центра коридора; to reach — протягивать, вытягивать; достигать места назначения) the Emperor spake the word (Император произнес слово) that may not be spoken (Император произнес слово, которое не может говорится, которое нельзя произносить; spoken — устный; громкий), and a granite door (и дверь из гранита) swung back on a secret spring (отворилась вовнутрь: «качнулась назад» на потайной/скрытой пружине; secret — тайный, секретный; потайной; to swing (swung) — качать, колебать), and he put his hands before his face (и он прикрыл руками лицо: «и он поместил свои руки перед своим лицом») lest his eyes should be dazzled (чтобы его глаза не ослепли от блеска; to dazzle — слепить; ослеплять блеском).
