Но это было ее последнее движение. Поздно вечером 23 марта Елизавета погрузилась в сон. С ней оставался ее любимый капеллан доктор Пэрри. Снаружи расхаживали в ожидании новостей самые близкие королеве и самые знатные в Англии люди. У парадного входа ждал оседланный жеребец — весть о кончине ее величества немедленно полетит на север, к королю Якову. Прошло несколько часов, и из спальни вышел под плач и стенания присутствующих доктор Пэрри. Все было кончено. Оставалось лишь молиться за упокой души ее величества королевы Елизаветы I.
