When he reached this point Jean stopped. A harassed look came into his eyes.

"I’m going to tell you something now that I’ve never told to anyone before. I’m an honest man, a man of principle; I’m going to tell you of the only discreditable action I’ve ever done in my life."

I must remind the reader here that Jean Charvin was wearing the pink and white stripes of the convict’s uniform (здесь я должен напомнить читателям, что Жан Шарвен был одет в арестантскую одежду в белую и розовую полоску), with his number stencilled on his chest (на груди у него по трафарету был написан номер; stencil — трафарет, шаблон, образец), and that he was serving a term of imprisonment for the murder of his wife (и что он отбывал срок тюремного заключения за убийство своей жены).
