In a boat, I have always noticed that it is the fixed idea of each member of the crew that he is doing everything (в лодке, я всегда замечал, навязчивая идея каждого члена экипажа — что /это/ он все делает). Harris's notion was, that it was he alone who had been working (мнение Гарриса было, что он один работает; notion — идея, понятие, представление; точка зрения), and that both George and I had been imposing upon him (а мы с Джорджем обманываем его; to impose upon — облагать /налогом, податью/; навязывать; обманывать). George, on the other hand, ridiculed the idea of Harris's having done anything more than eat and sleep (Джордж, с другой стороны, высмеивал мысль о том, что Гаррис сделал что-то большее, чем ел и спал), and had a cast-iron opinion that it was he — George himself (и

But I get it without asking for it — at least, so it appears to me — and this worries me.
George says he does not think I need trouble myself on the subject. He thinks it is only my over-scrupulous nature that makes me fear I am having more than my due; and that, as a matter of fact, I don't have half as much as I ought. But I expect he only says this to comfort me.

He said he had never been out with such a couple of lazily skulks as Harris and I (он сказал, что никогда не плавал с парой таких ленивых бездельников, как мы с Гаррисом; to be out — не быть дома, отсутствовать; lazily — лениво, медлительно).
That amused Harris (это позабавило Гарриса).
"Fancy old George talking about work (подумать только — старина Джордж говорит о работе)!" he laughed (смеялся он); "why, about half-an-hour of it would kill him (да полчаса работы убило бы его). Have you ever seen George work (ты когда-нибудь видел, чтобы Джордж работал)?" he added, turning to me (добавил он, обращаясь ко мне).
I agreed with Harris that I never had (я согласился с Гаррисом, что никогда не видел) — most certainly not since we had started on this trip (во всяком случае, с тех пор, как мы отправились в это путешествие; certainly — конечно, непременно).
"Well, I don't see how you can know much about it, one way or the other (не понимаю, откуда ты можешь об этом знать, так или иначе)," George retorted on Harris (Джордж возразил Гаррису); "for I'm blest if you haven't been asleep half the time (черт меня побери, если ты не спал полдороги: «половину времени»). Have you ever seen Harris fully awake, except at meal-time (ты когда-нибудь видел, чтобы Гаррис был полностью бодрствующим = не спал, кроме как во время еды; meal-time — время приема пищи)?" asked George, addressing me (спросил Джордж, обращаясь ко мне).

Truth compelled me to support George (/любовь/ к истине заставила меня поддержать Джорджа). Harris had been very little good in the boat, so far as helping was concerned, from the beginning (от Гарриса было очень мало проку в лодке, что касается помощи, с /самого/ начала; so far as something is concerned — насколько это касается чего-либо).
"Well, hang it all, I've done more than old J., anyhow (черт возьми, я сделал больше, во всяком случае, чем старина Джей)," rejoined Harris (возразил Гаррис; to rejoin — отвечать; возражать; воссоединяться).
"Well, you couldn't very well have done less (да и нельзя было бы сделать меньше)," added George.
"I suppose J. thinks he is the passenger (полагаю, Джей считает, что он пассажир)," continued Harris (продолжал Гаррис).
And that was their gratitude to me for having brought them and their wretched old boat all the way up from Kingston (и это была их благодарность за то, что я тащил их и несчастную старую лодку всю дорогу от Кингстона), and for having superintended and managed everything for them (за то, что я все для них организовал и устроил; to superintend — заведовать, руководить, управлять; to manage — руководить; справиться, суметь сделать), and taken care of them, and slaved for them (заботился о них, и надрывался для них). It is the way of the world (так устроен этот мир; the way of the world — общепринятые нормы поведения, общепринятый уклад жизни, взгляды).

We settled the present difficulty by arranging that Harris and George should scull up past Reading (мы уладили текущие разногласия, договорившись, что Гаррис и Джордж будут грести до Рэдинга; difficulty — трудность, преграда; разногласия, спор), and that I should tow the boat on from there (а я потащу оттуда лодку на бечеве). Pulling a heavy boat against a strong stream has few attractions for me now (грести в тяжелой лодке против сильного течения имеет для меня мало прелестей теперь). There was a time, long ago, when I used to clamour for the hard work (было время, давно, когда я шумно требовал тяжелой работы): now I like to give the youngsters a chance (теперь я предпочитаю дать возможность /поработать/ молодежи).
I notice that most of the old river hands are similarly retiring (я замечаю, что большинство старых речных гребцов также отступает; to retire — уходить, удаляться; увольнять/ся/), whenever there is any stiff pulling to be done (всякий раз, когда нужно хорошенько поработать веслами; stiff — тугой, жесткий; сильный, интенсивный). You can always tell the old river hand by the way in which he stretches himself out upon the cushions at the bottom of the boat (всегда можно узнать старого гребца по манере, в которой = по тому, как он растягивается на подушках на дне лодки), and encourages the rowers by telling them anecdotes about the marvellous feats he performed last season (и подбадривает гребцов, рассказывая им истории об удивительных подвигах, которые он совершал в прошлом году; season — время года; период; год).
