"You think he would be upset," she queried, "if I gave a man a sovereign to take them away and bury them?"
I answered that I thought he would never smile again.
An idea struck her (/новая/ мысль пришла ей в голову; to strike). She said:
"Do you mind keeping them for him (вы не возражаете = не согласитесь ли подержать их для него /у себя/)? Let me send them round to you (позвольте мне прислать их вам)."
"Madam (мадам/сударыня)," I replied (ответил я; to reply), "for myself I like the smell of cheese (что касается меня, /то/ мне нравится запах сыра), and the journey the other day with them from Liverpool (и путешествие с ними на днях из Ливерпуля) I shall ever look back upon as a happy ending to a pleasant holiday (я

An idea struck her. She said:

"Madam," I replied, "for myself I like the smell of cheese, and the journey the other day with them from Liverpool I shall ever look back upon as a happy ending to a pleasant holiday. But, in this world, we must consider others. The lady under whose roof I have the honour of residing is a widow, and, for all I know, possibly an orphan too. She has a strong, I may say an eloquent, objection to being what she terms `put upon.' The presence of your husband's cheeses in her house she would, I instinctively feel, regard as a `put upon'; and it shall never be said that I put upon the widow and the orphan."
"Very well, then (что ж, хорошо)," said my friend's wife, rising (сказала жена моего приятеля, вставая), "all I have to say is, that I shall take the children (все, что мне остается /сказать/ — я заберу детей) and go to an hotel until those cheeses are eaten (и отправлюсь в гостиницу, пока эти сыры не будут съедены; to eat). I decline to live any longer in the same house with them (я отказываюсь продолжать жить в одном доме с ними; to decline — склонять/ся/; отказываться; any longer — больше /не/)."
She kept her word, leaving the place in charge of the charwoman (она сдержала слово, оставляя жилище под присмотр служанки; to keep; place — место; жилище, усадьба; charge — ответственность, присмотр, попечение; charwoman — поденщица, приходящая домработница), who, when asked if she could stand the smell, replied, "What smell?" (которая, когда ее спросили, может ли она выносить запах, ответила: «Какой запах?») and who, when taken close to the cheeses and told to sniff hard (/и которая/, когда ее подвели близко к сырам и велели понюхать хорошенько; to tell — говорить; уверять, приказывать), said she could detect a faint odour of melons (сказала, что может уловить = чувствует слабый/легкий запах дынь; to detect — обнаруживать, выявлять, регистрировать). It was argued from this that little injury could result to the woman from the atmosphere, and she was left (отсюда сделали вывод, что незначительный вред для женщины может вытекать из этой атмосферы = такая атмосфера не сильно повредит женщине, и ее оставили; to argue — спорить; доказывать, служить доказательством; to leave).

The hotel bill came to fifteen guineas (счет из гостиницы составил/достиг пятнадцать гиней); and my friend, after reckoning everything up (и мой приятель, после подсчитывания всего = всех расходов), found that the cheeses had cost him eight-and-sixpence a pound (обнаружил, что сыры стоили ему восемь /шиллингов/ шесть пенсов за фунт). He said he dearly loved a bit of cheese, but it was beyond his means (он сказал, что очень любит /съесть/ кусочек сыра, но это ему не по средствам; dearly — нежно, с любовью, горячо; beyond — за пределами, вне, сверх); so he determined to get rid of them (поэтому он решил избавиться от них). He threw them into the canal (он /вы/бросил их в канал); but had to fish them out again, as the bargemen complained (но ему пришлось выудить их снова, поскольку лодочники подали жалобу; bargeman — барочник, лодочник). They said it made them feel quite faint (они сказали, он /сыр/ заставляет их чувствовать дурноту = от сыра им становится очень дурно). And, after that, he took them one dark night and left them in the parish mortuary (после этого приятель взял их одной темной ночью и оставил в церковной покойницкой; to take; to leave; mortuary — морг, покойницкая). But the coroner discovered them, and made a fearful fuss (но коронер обнаружил сыры и поднял страшный шум; to make; coroner — следователь, ведущий дела о насильственной или внезапной смерти при сомнительных обстоятельствах).
He said it was a plot to deprive him of his living by waking up the corpses (он сказал, это заговор, чтобы лишить его средств к существованию путем оживления: «пробуждения» трупов; to wake up — пробуждать/ся/).
My friend got rid of them, at last (мой приятель избавился от них, наконец), by taking them down to a sea-side town, and burying them on the beach (отвезя их в город на морском берегу и закопав на пляже). It gained the place quite a reputation (это создало городу до некоторой степени = своего рода репутацию). Visitors said they had never noticed before how strong the air was (приезжие говорили, что никогда раньше не замечали, какой сильный, бодрящий воздух /там/; visitor — посетитель, гость; турист), and weak-chested and consumptive people used to throng there for years afterwards (а слабогрудые и чахоточные толпами ездили туда потом многие годы; to throng — толпиться, ходить толпами).

Fond as I am of cheese, therefore (поэтому, как я ни люблю сыр), I hold that George was right in declining to take any (/но/ считаю, что Джордж был прав, отказываясь взять /его с собой/; to hold — держать; полагать, придерживаться /мнения, взгляда и т.д./).
