Понимание психологического смысла смерти не должно сопровождаться негативными ассоциациями. Серьезное символическое соприкосновение с ней в хорошо организованных и обеспечивающих поддержку условиях может привести к весьма полезным результатам и служить средством преодоления как негативных представлений о кончине, так и связанного с нею страха. Такое соприкосновение может привести к лучшему эмоциональному и физическому функционированию, большей степени самореализации, а также к более удовлетворительному и гармоничному приспособлению к процессу жизни.

Смерть и жизнь, обычно рассматриваемые,

как несовместимые противоположности, представляются на деле взаимозависимыми. Полноценное существование, наполненное сознанием каждого мига жизни, ведет к принятию смерти и примирению с ней. С другой стороны, подобный подход к человеческому существованию требует, чтобы мы смирились с нашей смертностью и бренностью бытия. Данное положение представляется сутью древних мистерий, различных видов духовной практики и ритуалов перехода.

Раввин Гершель Лимон, участвовавший в нашей обучающей психоделической программе на основе ЛСД, так выразил свое исключительное проникновение в существо этих диалектических взаимоотношений жизни и смерти. Во время выхода из ЛСД-сеанса, в котором он пережил сокрушительное столкновение со смертью с последовавшим чувством духовного возрождения, ему вспомнилось известное изречение, высказанное пятьсот лет назад Леонардо да Винчи. В час наступления кончины Леонардо подвел итог своему отношению к той богатой и плодотворной жизни, которую он прожил, сказав: «Я думал, что я живу, но я только готовился умереть». Рабби Лимон, описывая пережитую им во время ЛСД-сеанса борьбу смерти и возрождения, так перефразировал слова Леонардо: «Я думал, что я умираю, но я только готовился жить».
