Нельзя, следовательно, заключить, как это нередко делают, что все давние, традиционные верования и практики, бытующие в развивающихся обществах, обязательно выполняют какие-то полезные (адаптивные) функции. Вместо этого следует согласиться с тем, что любое верование или обычай занимают свое, особое место в континууме адаптивных ценностей. Они могут быть просто нейтральными или терпимыми или же могут благоприятствовать одним членам общества, нанося ущерб другим. Иногда они могут быть вредными для всех без исключения.
