pouring ['pLrIN], suddenly ['sAd(q)nlI], hook [hVk]
I was afraid that wind or wave would turn my box over. If the glass in the windows broke, the water would come pouring in. I had no food and nothing to drink. I couldn't lift up the roof of the box and I could not squeeze through the small hole. All I could do was to try to stuff something into some of the small holes that were letting water into my box.
I spent about four hours in my box, floating around in the sea. I expected that each moment would be my last. Suddenly I heard a noise on the side that had no window. That was the side with hooks on the outside.
The box was being pulled through the sea (ящик
My box continued to move through the sea for another hour It stopped quite suddenly (внезапно он остановился/замер), as though hit by a rock on the side where the hooks are (как будто ударившись о скалу той стороной: «ударенный скалой в /ту/ стенку», где были крючки). There was a noise of trampling on the roof (на крыше раздался шум шагов; to trample — топтать; тяжело ступать). I could hear something passing through the ring The box rose up a little I could see more light through the windows Once more I stuck my handkerchief through the hole in the roof (я снова просунул в отверстие мой платок) and called for help as loudly as I could (и начал призывать на помощь так громко, как мог). This time I heard a shout, repeated three times
handkerchief ['hxNkqCIf], shout [SaVt], repeated [rI'pJtId]
The box was being pulled through the sea. Waves rose up and down near the tops of my windows, cutting out the light. I fastened my handkerchief to a stick, stuck it through the hole in the roof and waved it around. I hoped that it might be seen from a ship.

I could hear footsteps on the roof Then a voice called out in English (затем кто-то: «чей-то голос» прокричал по-английски), "If there is anybody below, let him speak (если есть кто-нибудь /там/ внизу, пусть говорит)." I said I was an Englishman (я сказал, что я англичанин) and begged to be rescued as soon as possible (и умолял освободить меня как можно скорее; to rescue — спасать, избавлять; освобождать /из опасного места/). The voice told me I was safe (голос сказал, что я в безопасности) and that my box was fastened to their ship (и что мой ящик привязан к кораблю). There was a carpenter on his way to make a bigger hole in the roof (сию минуту придет плотник проделать = и проделает большее отверстие в крыше; be on one’s way — быть в пути, на подходе /к чему л./) so I could get out (чтобы я мог выбраться). I asked him not to wait (я попросил его не ждать), just to put his finger through the ring (просто просунуть
Then I heard people laughing Later, I was told that some of the sailors had thought I was mad It had never entered my head (мне и в голову не пришло; never — никогда; ни разу; никоим образом, совершенно не; to enter — входить, проникать) that I was now among people of my own size and strength (что теперь я находился среди людей одинакового со мной роста и силы).
rescue ['reskjH], cabin ['kxbIn], entered ['entqd]

Within minutes I was aboard ship (спустя несколько минут я находился на борту корабля) and being asked a thousand questions (и мне задавали тысячи вопросов). I was amazed at the sight of so many pygmies (я был приведен в замешательство при виде стольких пигмеев; to amaze — изумлять, поражать, удивлять; ошеломить, приводить в замешательство). My eyes were so used to looking at monstrous objects I couldn't believe the size of these small people I was quite unable to answer any of their questions
The captain, Mr Thomas Wilcocks, could see that I was not well He took me to his cabin (он отвел меня в свою каюту), gave me a drink (дал мне напиться), and told me to rest for a while (и велел/посоветовал мне немного отдохнуть). Before I went to sleep (прежде чем заснуть) I told the captain to be sure to rescue (я попросил капитана позаботиться /о том, чтобы/ спасти = вытащить; to be sure to do smth. — обязательно сделать что-л.; не забыть; постараться сделать /обычно для выражения просьбы, указания/; sure — уверенный; убедившийся; обязательный, непременный) all the valuable furniture and other things from my travelling box (всю ценную мебель и другие вещи из моего дорожного ящика), including the silk with which it was lined (включая шелковую ткань, которой он обит).
