It was three o'clock when they attained their destination (было три часа /ночи/, когда они добрались до места: «достигли цели своего пути»). The obliging and phlegmatic Jasmine fell off to sleep immediately (послушная, флегматичная Жасмин тут же уснула; obliging — любезный, услужливый), leaning against the trunk of a large tree (приклонившись к стволу большого дерева), while John and Kismine sat (в то время как Джон и Кисмин сидели), his arm around her (в обнимку: «его рука вокруг нее»), and watched the desperate ebb and flow of the dying battle (и наблюдали за отчаянными приливами и отливами затухающего боя) among the ruins of a vista that had been a garden spot that morning (среди ландшафта развалин, который /вчера/ утром был садом; vista — перспектива /в конце аллеи, между гор и т. п./; вид /обычно красивый/, панорама). It was three o'clock when they attained their destination. The obliging and phlegmatic Jasmine fell off to sleep immediately, leaning against the trunk of a large tree, while John and Kismine sat, his arm around her, and watched the desperate ebb and flow of the dying battle among the ruins of a vista that had been a garden spot that morning. Shortly after four o'clock the last remaining gun gave out a clanging sound and went out of action in a swift tongue of red smoke. Though the moon was down, they saw that the flying bodies were circling closer to the earth. When the planes had made certain that the beleaguered possessed no further resources, they would land and the dark and glittering reign of the Washingtons would be over.
With the cessation of the firing the valley grew quiet (с прекращением стрельбы долина затихла: «стала тихой»). The embers of the two aeroplanes glowed (тлеющие обломки двух аэропланов светились) like the eyes of some monster crouching in the grass (как глаза чудовища, залегшего в траве). The ch^ateau stood dark and silent (замок стоял темный и безмолвный), beautiful without light as it had been beautiful in the sun (/такой же/ прекрасный без света = в темноте, каким был при свете солнца), while the woody rattles of Nemesis filled the air above (в то время как = а деревянные трещотки Немезиды наполняли воздух вверху) with a growing and receding complaint (то нарастающим, то удаляющимся/убывающим недовольным стрекотом: complaint — жалоба; недовольство, неудовлетворённость). Then John perceived that Kismine, like her sister, had fallen sound asleep (заметил, что Кисмин, как и ее сестра, крепко заснула; to perceive — воспринимать /в основном зрением/, ощущать, чувствовать; понимать, осознавать).
It was long after four (время близилось к пяти: «было далеко за четыре») when he became aware of footsteps along the path (когда он /вдруг/ услышал шаги на тропинке; to become aware — воспринимать /органами чувств/; понимать, осознавать) they had lately followed (/по которой/ они недавно шли), and he waited in breathless silence (подождал, затаив дыхание; breathless — бездыханный; запыхавшийся; затаивший дыхание) until the persons to whom they belonged (пока люди, которым они принадлежали) had passed the vantagepoint he occupied (минуют его наблюдательный пункт; vantagepoint — выгодное положение; место, дающее хороший обзор). There was a faint stir in the air now (в воздухе теперь было = чувствовалось легкое движение) that was not of human origin (происходившее не от человека: «которое было не человеческого происхождения»), and the dew was cold (роса была холодной); he knew that the dawn would break soon (понял, что скоро наступит рассвет). John waited until the steps had gone a safe distance up the mountain and were inaudible (пока шаги ушли = удалились вверх по горе на безопасное расстояние и стали неслышны; audible — слышный, внятный; слышимый). Then he followed (затем он пошел следом).

With the cessation of the firing the valley grew quiet. The embers of the two aeroplanes glowed like the eyes of some monster crouching in the grass. Then John perceived that Kismine, like her sister, had fallen sound asleep.
It was long after four when he became aware of footsteps along the path they had lately followed, and he waited in breathless silence until the persons to whom they belonged had passed the vantagepoint he occupied. There was a faint stir in the air now that was not of human origin, and the dew was cold; he knew that the dawn would break soon. John waited until the steps had gone a safe distance up the mountain and were inaudible. Then he followed.

Braddock Washington was standing there motionless (стоял неподвижно), silhouetted against the gray sky (в виде силуэта на фоне серого неба) without sound or sign of life (без звука или признаков жизни). As the dawn came up out of the east (с востока поднимался рассвет; as — когда; в то время как), lending a cold green color to the earth (окрашивая землю в холодный зеленый цвет: «придавая земле холодный…»; to lend — одалживать, давать взаймы; давать, придавать), it brought the solitary figure into insignificant contrast with the new day (и одинокая фигура слабо выделялась в свете нового = наступающего дня: «он /рассвет/ привел одинокую фигуру в незначительный контраст с…»; insignificant — незначительный, несущественный; ничтожно малый, небольшой).
spread [spred], rewarded [rI'wLdId], insignificant ["InsIg'nIfIkqnt]
About half-way to the steep summit the trees fell away and a hard saddle of rock spread itself over the diamond beneath. Just before he reached this point he slowed down his pace, warned by an animal sense that there was life just ahead of him. Coming to a high boulder, he lifted his head gradually above its edge. His curiosity was rewarded; this is what he saw:

While John watched (пока Джон смотрел), his host remained for a few moments absorbed in some inscrutable contemplation (его хозяин = владелец замка оставался некоторое время погруженным в непроницаемое раздумье); then he signalled to the two negroes who crouched at his feet (затем подал знак двум неграм, которые скорчились у его ног) to lift the burden which lay between them (чтобы поднять ношу, лежавшую между ними). As they struggled upright (когда они стали с трудом выпрямляться; struggle — бороться; прилагать усилия, делая что-то трудное; стараться изо всех сил; upright — /вертикально/ вверх), the first yellow beam of the sun struck through the innumerable prisms (первый желтый луч солнца ударил сквозь = в бесчисленные призмы = грани) of an immense and exquisitely chiselled diamond (громадного, изысканно отточенного алмаза) — and a white radiance was kindled (вспыхнуло белое сияние) that glowed upon the air like a fragment of the morning star (озарявшее воздух, как осколок утренней звезды). The bearers staggered beneath its weight for a moment (носильщики зашатались было под тяжестью /камня/) — then their rippling muscles caught and hardened under the wet shine of the skins (потом их подрагивающие мускулы под влажным глянцем кожи замерли и отвердели; to ripple — покрываться рябью, зыбью) and the three figures were again motionless in their defiant impotency before the heavens (и три фигуры были снова неподвижны = застыли в своем бессильном вызове небесам; defiant — вызывающий; неповинующийся, непокорный, дерзкий; impotency — бессилие; impotent — бессильный).
