She laughed again (она снова засмеялась). “Not married (не женаты)! If I was a little better dressed there might be a chance for me (если бы я была немного лучше одета, у меня бы мог быть шанс). Where do you live (где вы живете)? Here (здесь)?”

We had arrived, by this time, at my mother’s door (к этому времени мы дошли до двери /дома/ матушки; to arrive – прибывать, приезжать; достигать). She held out her hand to say good-by (она протянула руку, чтобы попрощаться: «сказать – до свидания!»; to hold out).

 I walked about, wondering how I could find my way out of the world without disfiguring myself, and without suffering much pain. You have no river in these parts. I didn’t see my way out of the world, till I heard you ringing at the doctor’s house. I got a glimpse at the bottles in the surgery, when he let you in, and I thought of the laudanum directly. What were you doing there? Who is that medicine for? Your wife?”

“I am not married!”

She laughed again. “Not married! If I was a little better dressed there might be a chance for me. Where do you live? Here?”

We had arrived, by this time, at my mother’s door. She held out her hand to say good-by.

Houseless and homeless as she was (хотя

она и была бездомной и бесприютной), she never asked me to give her a shelter for the night (она ни разу не попросила меня дать ей приют на ночь; shelter – кров, приют, пристанище). I dare say I was to blame (полагаю, я заслуживаю осуждения; I dare say – полагаю, думаю; осмелюсь сказать; to dare – сметь, отваживаться; to blame – обвинять; порицать, осуждать) – shamefully to blame, if you like (ужасного осуждения, если хотите; shameful – позорный, постыдный; shame – стыд; позор). I only wonder what you would have done in my place (но мне просто интересно /знать/, что бы вы сделали на моем месте).

On your word of honor as a man (скажите честно: «дайте слово чести», как мужчина; upon my word! – честное слово!, клянусь честью!), would you have let that beautiful creature wander back to the shelter of the stone quarry like a stray dog (вы бы позволили этому прекрасному созданию вернуться в каменоломню, точно бродячая собака; to wander – бродить, скитаться; stray – заблудившийся; бездомный, бродячий)? God help the woman who is foolish enough to trust and love you (да поможет бог той женщине, которая достаточно глупа, чтобы довериться вам и полюбить вас), if you would have done that (если бы вы это сделали)!

I left her by the fire, and went to my mother’s room (я оставил ее у огня и пошел в комнату матушки; to leave).

If you have ever felt the heartache, you will know (если вы когда-нибудь чувствовали

сердечную боль, то поймете) what I suffered in secret when my mother took my hand, and said (что я втайне испытывал, когда матушка взяла мою руку и сказала), “I am sorry, Francis, that your night’s rest has been disturbed through me (прости, Фрэнсис, что твой ночной сон был потревожен из-за меня; through – через, сквозь; из-за).” I gave her the medicine (я дал ей лекарство); and I waited by her till the pains abated (и ждал /сидя/ рядом с ней, пока боли утихнут; to abate – ослаблять/ся/, уменьшать/ся/, утихать). My aunt Chance went back to her bed (тетушка Чанс вернулась к себе в постель); and my mother and I were left alone (матушка и я остались одни: «были оставлены одни»). I noticed that her writing-desk, moved from its customary place (я заметил, что ее письменный стол, передвинутый со своего обычного места; customary – обычный, привычный), was on the bed by her side (стоит на кровати рядом с ней; side – бок; место рядом).

She saw me looking at it (она увидела, что я смотрю на него). “This is your birthday, Francis (сегодня твой день рождения, Фрэнсис),” she said. “Have you anything to tell me (тебе есть что мне рассказать)?”

I had so completely forgotten my Dream (я так совершенно = настолько забыл свой сон), that I had no notion of what was passing in her mind (что понятия не имел, что у нее на уме: «что проходило в ее уме»; to pass – проходить; пересекать; /про/мелькнуть, появиться) when she said those words (когда она произнесла те слова). For a moment there was a guilty fear in me that she suspected something (на мгновение во мне возник страх вины: «виноватый страх», что она подозревает что-то). I turned away my face, and said (я отвернул лицо и сказал), “No, mother; I have nothing to tell (нет, мама, мне нечего рассказать).” She signed to me to stoop down over the pillow and kiss her (она показала мне знаком, чтобы я наклонился через подушку и поцеловал ее; to stoop – сутулить/ся/; наклонять/ся/). “God bless you, my love (благослови тебя бог, мой милый; my love – любовь моя, милый, милая /в обращении/)!” she said; and many happy returns of the day (поздравляю с днем рождения: «/желаю/ много счастливых возвращений этого дня»).” She patted my hand, and closed her weary eyes (она погладила мою руку, закрыла уставшие глаза; to pat – похлопывать; поглаживать), and, little by little, fell off peaceably into sleep (и мало-помалу мирно погрузилась в сон).

I stole downstairs again (я крадучись спустился по лестнице; to steal – красть; красться, идти крадучись). I think the good influence of my mother must have followed me down (думаю, благотворное влияние матушки, должно быть, сопутствовало мне).

At any rate, this is true (во всяком случае, это правда; at any rate – во всяком случае, как бы то ни было: «по любой ставке/расценке»; true – верный, правильный): I stopped with my hand on the closed kitchen door, and said to myself (я остановился, держа руку на /ручке/ закрытой кухонной двери, и сказал себе): “Suppose I leave the house, and leave the village (а что, если покинуть дом, деревню; to suppose – /пред/полагать, думать; предположим, /что…/; а что, если), without seeing her or speaking to her more (и больше не видеть ее и не говорить с ней)?”
