Thinking about it afterwards (размышляя об этом впоследствии), I could see (я пришел к выводу) that it isn't possible for a person to be taken seriously (что человек не может добиться, чтобы его воспринимали всерьез: «для человека невозможно быть воспринимаемым серьезно») when among people (находясь среди людей) who are not his equals (которые стоят выше него: «не являются ему ровней»; equal — равный; ровня). I have often noticed this in England since my return (я часто наблюдал это /и/ в Англии со времени моего возвращения; to notice — замечать, обращать внимание). If a man tries to make himself important in any way (если некий человек старается каким-либо образом показаться значительным), and he comes from an ordinary family (а происходит из обыкновенной/простой семьи) and has little money or education (и имеет мало денег или образования), he is regarded as both silly and foolish (то

If a man tries to make himself important in any way, and he comes from an ordinary family and has little money or education, he is regarded as both silly and foolish. He becomes an object of amusement.
Certainly, my activities in Brobdingnag were often the object of amusement at Court One day, for example, as I was taking a walk in the country (к примеру, однажды, прогуливаясь за городом; in the country — в сельской местности, за городом), I tried to jump over some cow dung (я попробовал перескочить через кучу коровьего помета) that was lying on my path (лежащую у меня на пути; path — тропинка; дорожка; путь, дорога). I had taken a run at it (я разбежался перед ней), but I jumped short (но сделал слишком короткий прыжок: «прыгнул коротко/недалеко») and landed up to my knees in the middle of it (и приземлился в ее середине, по колени /в помете/). I had to make the rest of the journey (остаток путешествия мне пришлось совершить) sitting in my muddy, smelly clothes inside my travelling box (сидя в грязной, вонючей одежде внутри своего дорожного ящика). That story like many others went around the palace for some days Many people got a good laugh at my expense

I made several things, both for myself and for other people during my stay in Brobdingnag My comb had so many broken teeth (в моем гребне было так много сломанных зубьев) that I made a new one (что я сделал /себе/ новый). I asked the King's barber to give me some soap suds when he was shaving the King one day (однажды я попросил у королевского цирюльника, когда он брил короля, дать мне немного мыльной пены; barber — парикмахер /мужской/; цирюльник) and I picked forty or fifty stumps of hair out of this (и выбрал из нее сорок или пятьдесят щетинок: «обрезков волос»; stump — пень; остаток; обрубок; обрезок; обломок и т. п.). I made the back of the comb from a piece of wood (спинку гребешка я сделал из куска дерева), making holes in it with the smallest needle (проделав в ней отверстия с помощью самой маленькой иголки) I could borrow from Glumdalclitch (какую я мог взять у Глюмдалклич; to borrow — занимать, брать на время). I fitted the hairs into these holes (в отверстия я вставил волоски) and was quite pleased with the result (и был вполне доволен результатом).

I also asked my friend the carpenter to make me some chairs in my own size, giving him a drawing I had made of an English cane chair. Then I asked one of the Queen's ladies to save me some combings from her Majesty's hair. From these, I was able to weave the back and seats of two small cane chairs. I made a present of them to the Queen.
She kept them (она сохранила их) and used to show them to her visitors (и всегда показывала своим гостям). They had never seen anything like them before Sometimes she would invite me to sit on one when I was visiting her (иногда, во время моих посещений, она предлагала мне сесть на один /из них/; to invite — приглашать; просить, призывать, предлагать). I absolutely refused (я решительно/наотрез отказывался), saying that I could never bring myself (говоря, что никогда не смог бы себя заставить = никогда бы не решился) to put that ignoble part of my body (поместить ту низменную часть моего тела; ignoble — низкого происхождения; подлый; низкий, низменный; постыдный) on the precious hairs (на драгоценные волосы) that had once adorned her majestic head (украшавшие когда-то ее величественную/царственную голову).

With her permission (с ее разрешения = с согласия королевы), I also used her hair (я также использовал ее волосы) to weave a purse for Glumdalclitch (чтобы сплести кошелек для Глюмдалклич). She couldn't use it for coins (она не могла использовать его для монет) since it was only five feet long (так как он был только пяти футов в длину) and not very strong (и не очень прочный), but she liked it all the same (но он ей все равно нравился).
The King often invited me to his rooms My bedroom box would be placed on a table there (мой спальный ящик устанавливался там на столе) and I would be asked to take out one of my own chairs (и меня просили вынести один из моих стульев) and sit on it (и сесть на него). Seated like that (расположившись подобным образом; to seat — сажать, усаживать; располагаться, находиться, помещаться), when his Majesty also sat down, each of us could see the other's face (мы могли, когда/если его величество тоже садился, смотреть друг другу в лицо: «каждый из нас мог видеть лицо другого»). We talked at great length
