The King of Brobdingnag, however, might well feel that I'd told too little about the size of his land. So perhaps I should also mention the most splendid sight I saw during my time there. That was the sight of the King's Guard. There were five hundred horses and riders, each horse between fifty-four and sixty feet high.

I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag (я был бы вполне счастлив в Бробдингнаге) if I hadn't had so many accidents (если бы я не имел = со мной не происходило так много /неприятных/
One day, for instance (однажды, например), I was taking a walk on the grass (я прогуливался по траве/лужайке; walk — прогулка пешком) when there came a sudden shower of hailstones (когда начался внезапный град; shower — ливень; hailstone — градина).
accident ['xksId(q)nt], shower ['SaVq], hailstone ['heIlstqVn]
I would have been quite happy in Brobdingnag if I hadn't had so many accidents because of my tiny size. Several of these accidents happened in the Palace gardens.
One day, for instance, I was taking a walk on the grass when there came a sudden shower of hailstones.
Glumdalclitch and her teacher were some distance away The hailstones knocked me to the ground (градины сбили/повалили меня на землю; to knock — стучать; ударять, бить; сбить) and I couldn't move (и я не мог двинуться /с места/). I felt as though someone was throwing tennis balls at me with great force I got so many bruises all over my body (я получил столько синяков по всему телу) that I had to stay in my bedroom box for ten days (что мне пришлось провести десять дней в своем ящике-спальне). A hailstone in that country (градина в той стране) weighs almost eighteen hundred times as much as a European one (весит почти в тысячу восемьсот раз больше, чем европейская: «восемнадцать сотен раз столько же, как…»). I know this because I have measured hailstones in both places

A more dangerous accident also happened to me in the Palace garden (в дворцовом саду со мной случилось и /другое/ более опасное приключение) when I was left by myself for a short time one day (когда однажды я был оставлен на короткое время один без присмотра: «с самим собой»). A small spaniel belonging to one of the gardeners got into the garden by chance (в сад случайно забрел/забрался небольшой спаниель, принадлежавший одному из садовников; to get into… It picked me up in its mouth (он схватил меня в пасть; to pick up — поднимать, подбирать) and ran to its master (и побежал к своему хозяину). Both the gardener and I got a bad fright
Fortunately, I hadn't been hurt in the least

Fortunately, I hadn't been hurt in the least. My clothes weren't even torn. But Glumdalclitch, who had been looking for me, got a terrible shock. The Queen was never told. Glumdalclitch was afraid the Queen would be angry, and I didn't want other people to hear the story. I felt it made me look rather silly.
Unfortunately (к сожалению), I was allowed very little time to myself after that accident (после этого случая мне почти никогда не позволяли остаться одному: «мне давалось очень мало времени /когда я был предоставлен/ самому себе»; to allow — позволять, разрешать; предоставлять, давать). Glumdalclitch didn't want me out of her sight (не хотела выпускать меня из виду) unless I was in my box (если я не находился в моей коробке). Actually (на самом деле), I had earlier had several slight accidents (я имел раньше = со мной уже случались несколько незначительных приключений) that I hadn't told her about (о которых я ей не рассказывал). Large birds, for example, were always a danger Once or twice (один или два раза) I came close to being carried off in their talons (они едва не унесли меня в своих когтях: «я был близок /к тому/, чтобы быть унесенным в их…»). Small birds, on the other hand, were only a nuisance They weren't in the least afraid of me They would steal food from my hand (крали еду /прямо/ из руки) when I tried to eat out of doors (когда я пытался поесть на улице).
The ladies of the Court often invited Glumdalclitch to their rooms I would be invited to come along as well (меня приглашали вместе с ней; to come along — сопровождать /кого-л./, идти /с кем-л./; as well — также, тоже). They liked to talk to me (они любили беседовать со мной), and I would often be placed on a table for this purpose (и с этой целью часто ставили меня на стол).
