“To pass to another witness. Mrs. Hubbard had told us that lying in bed she had been unable to see whether the communicating door was bolted or not, and so had asked Miss Ohlsson to see for her. Now — though her statement would have been perfectly true if she had been occupying compartment No. 2, 4, 12 or any even number, in which the bolt is directly under the handle of the door — in the uneven numbers such as compartment No. 3 the bolt is well above the handle and could not therefore be masked by the sponge-bag in the least. I was forced to the conclusion that Mrs. Hubbard was inventing an incident that had never occurred.
“And here let me say just a word or two about times (а здесь позвольте мне сказать пару слов: «слово или два» о времени). To my mind the really interesting point about the dented watch (по-моему, действительно интересная

“And here let me say just a word or two about times. To my mind the really interesting point about the dented watch, is the place where it was found — in Ratchett’s pyjama pocket, a singularly uncomfortable and unlikely place to keep one’s watch, especially as there is a watch ‘hook’ provided just by the head of the bed. I felt sure, therefore, that the watch had been deliberately placed in the pocket — faked. The crime, then, was not committed at a quarter past one.
“Was it then committed earlier (было ли оно, в таком случае, совершено раньше)? To be exact, at twenty-three minutes to one (точнее говоря, без двадцати трех минут час)? My friend M. Bouc advanced as an argument in favour of it (мой друг мсье Бук выдвинул в качестве довода/аргумента в пользу этого /времени/; to advance — продвигаться, идти вперед; выдвигать /предложение, возражение и т.п./; favour — благосклонность, расположение; in favour of — в защиту; в пользу) the loud cry which awoke me from sleep (тот самый громкий крик, который разбудил меня /ото сна/). But if Ratchett had been heavily drugged (но, если Рэтчетт был /сильно/ накачан снотворным; heavily — тяжело; сильно, интенсивно; drug — лекарство, снадобье; наркотик; to drug — подмешивать наркотик; давать наркотики), he could not have cried out (он не мог бы вскрикнуть; to cry out — вскрикнуть, выкрикивать). If he had been capable of crying out (если бы он был способен кричать; capable — способный, одаренный; способный /на что-либо/), he would have been capable of making some kind of struggle to defend himself (он смог бы хоть как-то сопротивляться убийце: «побороться, чтобы защитить себя»; kind — сорт, класс; вид, разновидность, struggle — борьба), and there were no signs of any such struggle (а никаких признаков подобной борьбы /в купе и на теле убитого/ не было).

“I remembered that MacQueen had called attention (я вспомнил, что Маккуин привлек /мое/ внимание; to call — кричать, закричать; призывать, взывать, обращаться), not once but twice (/даже/ не один, а два раза) (and the second time in a very blatant manner (а во второй раз очень уж явно: «в очевидной манере»; blatant — крикливый, вульгарный; явный, очевидный)), to the fact that Ratchett could speak no French (к тому факту, что Рэтчетт не говорил: «не умел говорить» по-французски). I came to the conclusion that the whole business at twenty-three minutes to one (я пришел к выводу, что все это представление без двадцати трех минут час; business — дело, специальность; разг. дело, вопрос, случай; театр. игра) was a comedy played for my benefit (было

“I remembered that MacQueen had called attention, not once but twice (and the second time in a very blatant manner), to the fact that Ratchett could speak no French. I came to the conclusion that the whole business at twenty-three minutes to one was a comedy played for my benefit! Anyone might see through the watch business — it is a common enough device in detective stories.
They assumed that I should see through it (они предполагали, что я разгадаю его /трюк с часами/; to assume — принимать, брать /на себя/; предполагать, допускать) and that, pluming myself on my own cleverness (и что /я/, довольный своей собственной догадливостью; to plume — чистить клювом перья; быть довольным /собой/, гордиться; cleverness — ум, одаренность), I would go on to assume that since Ratchett spoke no French (я продолжу /свои догадки/ и предположу, что раз Рэтчетт не говорил по-французски), the voice I heard at twenty-three minutes to one could not have been his (то голос, который я слышал без двадцати трех минут час, не мог принадлежать ему), and that Ratchett must have been already dead (и что Рэтчетт должен был быть уже мертв). But I am convinced that at twenty-three minutes to one (но я убежден, что без двадцати трех минут час) Ratchett was still lying in his drugged sleep (Рэтчетт все еще спал, накачанный снотворным; to lie (lay, lain; lying) — лежать; sleep — сон).

But I am convinced that at twenty-three minutes to one Ratchett was still lying in his drugged sleep.
“But the device has succeeded (но этот прием сработал; to succeed — достигнуть цели, добиться)! I have opened my door and looked out (я открыл свою дверь и выглянул /в коридор/). I have actually heard the French phrase used (я действительно услышал фразу, произнесенную по-французски; to use — употреблять, пользоваться; used — использованный). If I am so unbelievably dense as not to realize the significance of that phrase (если бы я /вдруг/ оказался настолько глупым, чтобы не понять смысл этой фразы; dense — густой, плотный; разг. тупой, глупый; to realize — осуществлять, выполнять; понимать, осознавать), it must be brought to my attention (мое внимание должно было быть привлечено к ней). If necessary, MacQueen can come right out in the open (в случае необходимости, Маккуин мог поделиться своими наблюдениями; to come out into the open — быть откровенным, не скрывать /своих взглядов и т. п./). He can say (он мог сказать), ‘Excuse me, M. Poirot, that can’t have been Mr. Ratchett speaking (извините, мсье Пуаро, но мистер Рэтчетт не мог /этого/ сказать). He couldn’t speak French (он не говорил по-французски).’

“Now, what was the real time of the crime (итак, каково же настоящее время преступления = когда же на самом деле было совершено преступление)? And who killed him (и кто же убил его)?
“In my opinion (по-моему; opinion — мнение, взгляд) — and this is only an opinion (и это только мнение) — Ratchett was killed at some time very close upon two o’clock (Рэтчетт был убит где-то около двух часов /ночи/), the latest hour the doctor gives us as possible (самый поздний час, который доктор сообщает нам как возможный /час убийства/ = так как позже, по мнению доктора, его убить не могли; to give — давать; сообщать).
