“She did not imagine it, Michel. The assassin of M. Ratchett passed that way — and dropped that button.”
As the significance of M. Bouc’s words became plain to him, Pierre Michel flew into a violent state of agitation.
“It is not true, Monsieur (это неправда, мсье); it is not true!” he cried (воскликнул он; to cry — кричать, орать; восклицать). “You are accusing me of the crime (вы обвиняете меня в этом преступлении). Me, I am innocent (Господи, я же невиновен; innocent — невинный; невиновный). I am absolutely innocent (я совершенно невиновен)! Why should I want to kill a Monsieur (зачем бы мне понадобилось убивать мсье) whom I have never seen before (которого я никогда раньше не видел)?”
“Where were you when Mrs. Hubbard’s bell rang (где вы были, когда звенел звонок миссис Хаббард)?”
“I told you, Monsieur (я сказал вам, мсье), in the next coach (в соседнем вагоне; coach — карета, экипаж; пассажирский вагон, разделенный на купе) talking to my colleague (разговаривал с моим коллегой).”
“We will send for him (мы пошлем за ним).”
“Do so, Monsieur (пошлите: «сделайте это», мсье), I implore you, do so (я умоляю вас, пошлите).”

The conductor of the next coach was summoned He immediately confirmed Pierre Michel’s statement He added that the conductor from the Bucharest coach (он добавил, что проводник из бухарестского вагона) had also been there (также был там). The conductor of the next coach was summoned. He immediately confirmed Pierre Michel’s statement. He added that the conductor from the Bucharest coach had also been there. The three of them had been discussing the situation caused by the snow. They had been talking some ten minutes when Michel fancied he heard a bell. As he opened the doors connecting the two coaches, they had all heard it plainly — a bell ringing repeatedly. Michel had run post-haste to answer it.
“So you see, Monsieur, I am not guilty (вы видите, мсье, я не виновен),” cried Michel anxiously (с волнением кричал Мишель).
“And this button from a Wagon Lit tunic (а эта пуговица с форменного пиджака /компании/ спальных вагонов), how do you explain it (как вы ее объясняете)?”
“I cannot, Monsieur (я не могу /объяснить/, мсье). It is a mystery to me (для меня это тайна). All my buttons are intact (все мои пуговицы целы; intact — неповрежденный, невредимый, нетронутый).”
Both of the other conductors also declared (оба других проводника тоже заявили) that they had not lost a button (что они не теряли пуговиц); also that they had not been (а так же то, что они не были) inside Mrs. Hubbard’s compartment at any time (внутри купе миссис Хаббард никогда: «в любое время»).
“Calm yourself, Michel (успокойтесь, Мишель),” said M. Bouc, “and cast your mind back to the moment (и вспомните тот самый момент; to cast — бросать, кидать; редк. обдумывать, размышлять; mind — ум, разум; память) when you ran to answer Mrs. Hubbard’s bell (когда вы бежали, чтобы откликнуться на звонок миссис Хаббард). Did you meet anyone at all in the corridor (вы, вообще, встретили кого-нибудь в коридоре)?”
“No, Monsieur.”
