`Surely thou mayest enter,' said the young Fisherman, `for in the days when with no heart thou didst go through the world thou must have much suffered.'
`Alas (увы)!' cried his Soul (закричала Душа), `I can find no place of entrance (я не могу найти входа: «места входа»), so compassed about with love is this heart of thine (настолько окружено любовью твое сердце; compass — компас; окружность, to compass — окружать).'
`Yet I would (все же мне бы хотелось) that I could help thee (чтобы я мог помочь тебе),' said the young Fisherman.
And as he spake (и, когда он говорил) there came a great cry of mourning from the sea (из моря послышался громкий: «сильный» крик печали; mourning — печать, горе, скорбь; траур), even the cry (именно

And as he spake there came a great cry of mourning from the sea, even the cry that men hear when one of the Sea-folk is dead. And the young Fisherman leapt up, and left his wattled house, and ran down to the shore.
And the black waves came hurrying to the shore (и черные волны неслись к берегу; to hurry — спешить, торопиться), bearing with them a burden (принеся с собой какую-то ношу; burden — ноша, тяжесть, груз) that was whiter than silver (которая была белее, чем серебро). White as the surf it was (она была бела, как прибой = как пена), and like a flower (и, подобно цветку) it tossed on the waves (ее подбрасывало на волнах; to toss — бросать, кидать; подбрасывать). And the surf took it from the waves (и прибой принял: «взял» ее у волн; to take (took, taken)), and the foam took it from the surf (и пена приняла ее у прибоя), and the shore received it (и берег принял ее), and lying at his feet (и лежащим у его ног) the young Fisherman saw the body of the little Mermaid (молодой Рыбак увидел тело маленькой Русалочки; to see (saw, seen)). Dead at his feet it was lying (мертвое, у его ног оно лежало).

Weeping as one smitten with pain (рыдая, как человек, охваченный/убитый горем; to smite (smote, smitten) — ударять, бить; поражать) he flung himself down beside it (он бросился ниц рядом с ним; to fling (flung)), and he kissed the cold red of the mouth (и целовал ее холодный красный рот: «холодную красноту рта»), and toyed with the wet amber of the hair (и перебирал ее влажные янтарные волосы; to toy — вертеть в руках). He flung himself down beside it on the sand (он бросился рядом с ним на песок), weeping as one trembling with joy (рыдая, как человек, дрожащий от радости), and in his brown arms (и своими смуглыми руками; brown — коричневый; смуглый, загорелый) he held it to his breast (он прижал ее к своей груди; to hold (held) — держать). Cold were the lips (холодны были ее уста), yet he kissed them (но он целовал их). Salt was the honey of the hair (солон был мед ее волос: «солью был мед волос»), yet he tasted it with a bitter joy (и все же он вкушал его с горькой радостью; to taste — пробовать, отведать). Salt was the honey of the hair, yet he tasted it with a bitter joy. He kissed the closed eyelids, and the wild spray that lay upon their cups was less salt than his tears.
And to the dead thing he made confession (и этому мертвому созданию он признался; confession — признание /своей вины/). Into the shells of its ears (и в раковины ее ушей: «ушей этого создания») he poured the harsh wine of his tale (он влил терпкое вино своей истории; harsh — грубый, жесткий; резкий, неприятный). He put the little hands round his neck (он обвил ее маленькими ручками свою шею: «он положил ее маленькие руки вокруг своей шеи»), and with his fingers (и своими пальцами) he touched the thin reed of the throat (он коснулся тонкой тростинки ее шеи). Bitter, bitter was his joy (горькой, горькой была его радость), and full of strange gladness was his pain (и полной странной радости была его печаль).

The black sea came nearer (черное море подошло ближе), and the white foam moaned like a leper (и белая пена стонала, как прокаженный). With white claws of foam (белыми когтями пены) the sea grabbled at the shore (море хваталось за берег; to grabble — нащупывать; хватать). From the palace of the Sea-King (из дворца Морского Царя) came the cry of mourning again (снова раздался вопль печали/скорби), and far out upon the sea (и далеко в море) the great Tritons blew hoarsely upon their horns (большие Тритоны хрипло трубили в свои раковины: «рожки»; to blow (blew, blown) — дуть, веять /о ветре/; играть на духовом инструменте; horn — рог; духовой музыкальный инструмент).
`Flee away (беги прочь), said his Soul, `for ever doth the sea come nigher (потому что море подходит все ближе; nigh — близко, рядом), and if thou tarriest (и если ты замешкаешься) it will slay thee (оно убьет тебя). Flee away (беги прочь), for I am afraid (потому что я боюсь), seeing that thy heart is closed against me (видя, что твое сердце закрыто для меня) by reason of the greatness of thy love (по причине величия/силы твоей любви). Flee away to a place of safety (беги прочь, в безопасное место; safe — безопасный).
