And his Soul answered him (и его Душа ответила ему), `It may be (может быть) that it is this city (что это тот самый город), therefore let us enter in (поэтому давай войдем в него).'

And on the evening of the third day they came to a city, and the young Fisherman said to his Soul, `Is this the city in which she dances of whom thou did'st speak to me?'

And his Soul answered him, `It may be that it is this city, therefore let us enter in.'

So they entered in and passed through the streets (тогда они вошли в него и пошли по улицам), but nowhere could the young Fisherman find the river (но нигде не мог молодой

Рыбак найти ни реки) or the inn that stood by its side (и ни трактира, который бы стоял на ее берегу; to stand (stood); side — стенка; берег). And the people of the city (и жители города; people — народ, нация; население, жители) looked curiously at him (странно смотрели на него; curiously — любопытно, странно), and he grew afraid (и он испугался; to grow (grew, grown)) and said to his Soul (и сказал своей Душе), `Let us go hence (давай уйдем отсюда прочь), for she who dances with white feet is not here (потому что той, которая танцует белыми ножками, здесь нет).'

But his Soul answered (но его Душа ответила), `Nay, but let us tarry (нет, но давай остановимся /в городе/; to tarry — пребывать, останавливаться), for the night is dark (потому как ночь темная) and there will be robbers on the way (а на дороге будут разбойники; robber — грабитель, разбойник, вор).'

So they entered in and passed through the streets, but nowhere could the young Fisherman find the river or the inn that stood by its side. And the people of the city looked curiously at him, and he grew afraid and said to his Soul, `Let us go hence, for she who dances with white feet is not here.'

But his Soul answered, `Nay, but let us tarry, for the night is dark and there will be robbers on the way.'

So he sat him down in the market-place (тогда он уселся на рыночной площади; to sit (sat)) and rested (и стал отдыхать), and after a time (и, спустя некоторое время) there went by a hooded merchant (мимо прошел купец /в плаще /с капюшоном/; hood — капюшон, hooded — закрытый капюшоном; с капюшоном /о плаще и т.п./) who had a cloak of cloth of Tartary (а плащ был из татарского сукна: «/купец/, у которого был плащ»), and bore a lantern (и /он/ нес фонарь; to bear (bore, born) — переносить; носить, нести) of pierced horn (из проколотого рога; to pierce — пронзать, протыкать, прокалывать) at the end of a jointed reed (на конце тростника /с коленцами/; joint — место соединения, стык, jointed — складной; шарнирный, коленчатый). And the merchant said to him (и купец сказал ему), `Why dost thou sit in the market-place (почему ты сидишь на рыночной площади; dost thou = do you), seeing that the booths are closed (видя, что все лавчонки закрыты) and the bales corded (и тюки /с товарами/ связаны веревками; bale — кипа /товара/, тюк; cord — тонкая веревка, шнурок)?'

And the young Fisherman answered him (и молодой Рыбак ответил ему), `I can find no inn in this city (я не могу найти в этом городе ни одного постоялого двора), nor have I any kinsman (и нет у меня ни одного родственника) who might give me shelter (который мог бы дать мне кров).'

`Are we not all kinsmen (разве мы все не родственники)?' said the merchant (сказал купец). `And did not one God make us (и не один ли Бог создал нас)? Therefore come with me (поэтому пойдем со мной), for I have a guest-chamber (потому что у меня есть комната для гостей; guest — гость, chamber — комната /в жилом доме/).'

So he sat him down in the market-place and rested, and after a time there went by a hooded merchant who had a cloak of cloth of Tartary, and bore a lantern of pierced horn at the end of a jointed reed. And the merchant said to him, `Why dost thou sit in the market-place, seeing that the booths are closed and the bales corded?'

And the young Fisherman answered him, `I can find no inn in this city, nor have I any kinsman who might give me shelter.'

`Are we not all kinsmen?' said the merchant. `And did not one God make us? Therefore come with me, for I have a guest-chamber.'

So the young Fisherman rose up (тогда

молодой Рыбак поднялся /на ноги/; to rise (rose, risen)) and followed the merchant to his house (и последовал за купцом в его дом). And when he had passed through a garden of pomegranates (и, когда он прошел через гранатовый сад) and entered into the house (и вошел в дом), the merchant brought him rose-water (купец принес ему розовой воды; to bring (brought)) in a copper dish (в медной чаше) that he might wash his hands (чтобы он мог вымыть руки), and ripe melons (и спелые дыни) that he might quench his thirst (чтобы он мог утолить свою жажду; to quench — гасить, тушить; утолять /жажду/), and set a bowl of rice (и поставил миску риса) and a piece of roasted kid (и кусок жареного козленка) before him (перед ним).

And after that he had finished (и после того, как он поел: «закончил»), the merchant led him to the guest-chamber (купец отвел его в комнату для гостей; to lead (led)), bade him sleep and be at rest (и пригласил его почивать и пожелал ему /хорошо/ отдохнуть; to bid (bade, bidden) — предлагать цену /на аукционе/; объявлять, заявлять; приглашать). And the young Fisherman gave him thanks (и молодой Рыбак поблагодарил его; to give (gave, given), thanks — благодарность), and kissed the ring that was on his hand (и поцеловал кольцо, что было на его руке), and flung himself down on the carpets (и бросился на ковры; to fling (flung) — метать, бросать) of dyed goat's-hair (из крашенной козьей шерсти; to dye — красить, окрашивать; hair — волосы; шерсть /животного/). And when he had covered himself (и когда он накрылся; to cover — покрывать, закрывать, накрывать) with a covering of black lambs-wool (покровом из черной овечьей шерсти; covering — покрышка; укрытие, покров) he fell asleep (он заснул).

So the young Fisherman rose up and followed the merchant to his house. And when he had passed through a garden of pomegranates and entered into the house, the merchant brought him rose-water in a copper dish that he might wash his hands, and ripe melons that he might quench his thirst, and set a bowl of rice and a piece of roasted kid before him.

And after that he had finished, the merchant led him to the guest-chamber, bade him sleep and be at rest. And the young Fisherman gave him thanks, and kissed the ring that was on his hand, and flung himself down on the carpets of dyed goat's-hair. And when he had covered himself with a covering of black lambs-wool he fell asleep.

And three hours before dawn (и за три часа до рассвета), and while it was still night (пока все еще была ночь), his Soul waked him (его Душа разбудила его; to wake — просыпаться; будить), and said to him (и сказала ему), `Rise up (вставай) and go to the room of the merchant (и иди в комнату купца), even to the room in which he sleepeth (прямо в комнату, в которой он спит), and slay him (и убей его), and take from him his gold (и забери у него его золото), for we have need of it (потому что мы нуждаемся в нем).'
