He slipped into the familiar lie he made his bread and butter by.

"You're sweet to me."

"You bitch," he said. "You rich bitch. That's poetry. I'm full of poetry now. Rot and poetry. Rotten poetry."

"Stop it. Harry, why do you have to turn into a devil now?"

"I don't like to leave anything," the man said. "I don't like to leave things behind."

It was evening now (теперь был = наступил вечер) and he had been asleep (и он проснулся: «он /только что/ спал»). The sun was gone behind the hill (солнце зашло за холм) and there was a shadow all across the plain (через всю равнину была = легла тень) and the small animals were feeding close to camp (и мелкие животные паслись: «кормились» /теперь/ почти у самых палаток: «около лагеря/места их стоянки»); quick dropping heads and switching tails (они часто и быстро припадали головами к земле, взмахивали хвостами: «быстро падающие головы и щелкающие хвосты»; to switch —

The birds no longer waited on the ground (птицы уже не выжидали = дежурили, /сидя/ на земле). They were all perched heavily in a tree (они грузно уселись на дереве; to perch — садиться /на насест, ветку/; perch — насест, жердочка). There were many more of them (их стало гораздо больше). His personal boy was sitting by the bed (его личный слуга/бой сидел возле койки).

"Memsahib's gone to shoot (мемсаиб пошла стрелять; memsahib — мемсаиб, госпожа)," the boy said (сказал бой). "Does Bwana want (бвана /что-нибудь/ нужно)?"

"Nothing (ничего)."

She had gone to kill a piece of meat (она пошла добыть мясо = дичь: «убить кусок мяса») and, knowing how he liked to watch the game (и, зная, как он любит смотреть на дичь; game — игра; развлечение; дичь), she had gone well away (она отошла подальше) so she would not disturb this little pocket of the plain that he could see (чтобы не потревожить тот уголок равнины, который он мог видеть = был ему виден; pocket — карман; кармашек; район, участок). She was always thoughtful, he thought (она всегда все помнит, — подумал он; thoughtful — думающий, помнящий о /чем-либо/; внимательный; заботливый). On anything she knew about (все, что узнала), or had read (или прочла), or that she had ever heard (или когда-нибудь слышала).

It was evening now and he had been asleep. "Nothing."

She had gone to kill a piece of meat and, knowing how he liked to watch the game, she had gone well away so she would not disturb this little pocket of the plain that he could see. She was always thoughtful, he thought. On anything she knew about, or had read, or that she had ever heard.

It was not her fault that when he went to her he was already over (это не ее вина, что он пришел к ней уже конченым: «когда он пришел к ней, он был уже конченым»; to be over — кончиться, завершиться). How could a woman know (откуда женщине знать: «как может женщина знать») that you meant nothing that you said (что за словами, которые говорятся ей, ничего нет: «что ты не подразумеваешь /того/, что говоришь»); that you spoke only from habit and to be comfortable (что говоришь просто в силу привычки и потому, что так удобнее; to speak)? After he no longer meant what he said (с тех пор как он перестал придавать значение тому: «больше не подразумевал /того/», что он говорит), his lies were more successful with women (его ложь имела больше успеха: «была более успешной» у женщин) than when he had told them the truth (чем правда: «чем /в то время/, когда он говорил им правду»).

It was not so much that he lied (/впрочем/, дело было скорее не в том, что он лгал) as that there was no truth to tell (а в том, что /у него/ просто не было правды, чтобы ее говорить). He had had his life and it was over (у него была жизнь, но она закончилась) and then he went on living it again (а потом он стал проживать ее снова) with different people and more money (среди других людей и имея больше денег), with the best of the same places (/бывая/ в лучших из знакомых: «тех же самых» мест), and some new ones (и в некоторых новых).

It was not her fault that when he went to her he was already over. How could a woman know that you meant nothing that you said; that you spoke only from habit and to be comfortable? After he no longer meant what he said, his lies were more successful with women than when he had told them the truth.

It was not so much that he lied as that there was no truth to tell. He had had his life and it was over and then he went on living it again with different people and more money, with the best of the same places, and some new ones.

You kept from thinking and it was all marvellous (если не вдумываться, то все шло прекрасно: «стараешься не задумываться — и все чудесно»; to keep — держать,

You were equipped with good insides (ты наделен здоровым нутром) so that you did not go to pieces that way, the way most of them had (поэтому ты не раскисал так, как раскисает большинство из них; to go to pieces — развалиться на части; погибнуть, опуститься, потерять человеческий облик; не выдержать, сломаться), and you made an attitude (и делал вид; attitude — позиция; отношение) that you cared nothing for the work you used to do (что тебе плевать на работу, которой ты был занят раньше; to care — беспокоиться; заботиться; проявлять интерес /к кому-либо, чему-либо/; nothing — ничего, ничто; нисколько, ни в малейшей степени; used to используется при описании событий, которые регулярно происходили в прошлом, а потом прекратились), now that you could no longer do it (теперь, когда = потому что ты не мог ее больше делать). But, in yourself, you said that you would write about these people (но самому себе ты говорил, что /когда-нибудь/ напишешь про этих людей); about the very rich (про очень богатых); that you were really not of them (что на самом деле ты не /один/ из них) but a spy in their country (а шпион в их стране); that you would leave it and write of it (что ты покинешь ее и напишешь о ней) and for once it would be written by some one who knew what he was writing of (и первый раз в жизни это будет написано человеком, который: «кем-то, кто» знает то, о чем пишет; for once — на этот раз, в виде исключения). But he would never do it (но он так и не сделал этого), because each day of not writing (потому что каждый день праздности: «неписания»), of comfort (комфорта), of being that which he despised (презрения к самому себе: «/продолжения/ быть тем, что он презирал»), dulled his ability (притуплял его способности; dull — тупой, глупый; вялый, слабый; to dull — притуплять; уменьшать) and softened his will to work (и ослаблял его желание работать; to soften — смягчать, размягчать) so that, finally, he did no work at all (так что в конце концов он совсем перестал работать: «не работал вообще»).

You kept from thinking and it was all marvellous. You were equipped with good insides so that you did not go to pieces that way, the way most of them had, and you made an attitude that you cared nothing for the work you used to do, now that you could no longer do it. But, in yourself, you said that you would write about these people; about the very rich; that you were really not of them but a spy in their country; that you would leave it and write of it and for once it would be written by some one who knew what he was writing of. But he would never do it, because each day of not writing, of comfort, of being that which he despised, dulled his ability and softened his will to work so that, finally, he did no work at all.

The people he knew now were all much more comfortable (люди, с которыми он теперь знался, чувствовали себя гораздо спокойнее) when he did not work (когда он не работал). That in some way he could work the fat off his soul (что он как-нибудь сумеет согнать жир с души) the way a fighter went into the mountains to work and train (как боксер, /который/ уезжает в горы, работает и тренируется; to fight — драться, сражаться; fighter — воин; боец; боксер) in order to burn it out of his body (чтобы согнать его = жир с тела; to burn out — выжигать, сжигать).

The people he knew now were all much more comfortable when he did not work. Africa was where he had been happiest in the good time of his life, so he had come out here to start again. They had made this safari with the minimum of comfort. There was no hardship; but there was no luxury and he had thought he could get back into training that way. That in some way he could work the fat off his soul the way a fighter went into the mountains to work and train in order to burn it out of his body.
