Often did the Woodcutter (часто Дровосек) and his wife chide him (и его жена бранили/журили мальчика: «его»), and say: 'We did not deal with thee (мы же не обращались с тобою; to deal — распределять; обходиться, обращаться, вести себя, thee = you) as thou dealest with those (как ты ведешь себя с теми; thou dealest = you deal) who are left desolate (кто оставлен всеми: «кто оставлены одинокими»; to leave (left), desolate — заброшенный; покинутый, одинокий), and have none to succour them (и у которых нет никого, кто мог бы прийти им на помощь в трудную минуту; to succour — оказывать помощь, приходить на помощь в трудную минуту). Wherefore art thou so cruel (почему ты настолько жесток; art thou = are you) to all who need pity (ко всем, кто нуждается в жалости/сострадании)?'

Often did the old priest send for him (старый

Do it no harm (не причиняй ей вреда; harm — вред, ущерб). The wild birds that roam through the forest (дикие птицы, что порхают по лесу; roam — странствовать, бродить) have their freedom (свободны: «обладают своей свободой»). Snare them not (не лови их в силки; to snare — поймать в ловушку, устроить западню) for thy pleasure (ради своего удовольствия; thy = your). God made the blind-worm (Бог создал слепозмейку) and the mole (и крота), and each has its place (и у каждого из них свое место). Who art thou (кто ты такой; art thou = are you) to bring pain into God's world (чтобы нести боль в Божий мир)? Even the cattle of the field (даже скотина на полях; cattle — крупный рогатый скот; коровы и быки) praise Him (прославляет Его)."

The wild birds that roam through the forest have their freedom. Snare them not for thy pleasure. God made the blind-worm and the mole, and each has its place. Who art thou to bring pain into God's world? Even the cattle of the field praise Him."

But the Star-Child heeded not their words (но Звездный Мальчик не обращал внимания на их слова; to heed — обращать внимание, учитывать), but would frown and flout (но хмурился и насмехался/выражал презрение), and go back to his companions (и возвращался к своим товарищам), and lead them (и командовал: «руководил» ими). And his companions followed him (и его товарищи следовали за ним), for he was fair (потому что он был прекрасен), and fleet of foot (и быстроног; fleet — быстрый), and could dance (и мог танцевать), and pipe (играть на дудке), and make music (и музицировать/сочинять музыку). And wherever the Star-Child led them (и куда бы не вел их Звездный Мальчик) they followed (они следовали за ним), and whatever the Star-Child bade them do (и чтобы не приказывал ми сделать Звездный Мальчик; to bid (bade, bidden)), that did they (они это делали). And when he pierced with a sharp reed (и когда он протыкал острой тростинкой; to pierce — пронзать, протыкать) the dim eyes of the mole (тусклые глаза крота), they laughed (они смеялись), and when he cast stones (и когда он швырял камни) at the leper (в прокаженных) they laughed also (они тоже смеялись). And in all things he ruled them (и во всех поступках он руководил ими; to rule — управлять, руководить), and they became hard of heart (и они стали такими же жестокосердечными) even as he was (точно как и он; even — даже; точно, именно).

But the Star-Child heeded not their words, but would frown and flout, and go back to his companions, and lead them. And his companions followed him, for he was fair, and fleet of foot, and could dance, and pipe, and make music. And wherever the Star-Child led them they followed, and whatever the Star-Child bade them do, that did they. And when he pierced with a sharp reed the dim eyes of the mole, they laughed, and when he cast stones at the leper they laughed also. And in all things he ruled them, and they became hard of heart even as he was.

And being weary (будучи утомленной; weary — усталый, утомленный) she sat her down (она присела; to sit (sat)) under a chestnut-tree to rest (под каштановым деревом, чтобы отдохнуть).

Now there passed one day through the village a poor beggar-woman. Her garments were torn and ragged, and her feet were bleeding from the rough road on which she had travelled, and she was in very evil plight. And being weary she sat her down under a chestnut-tree to rest.

But when the Star-Child saw her (но когда Звездный Мальчик увидел ее; to see (saw, seen)), he said to his companions (он сказал своим сотоварищам), 'See (смотрите)! There sitteth a foul beggar-woman (грязная попрошайка сидит; sitteth = sit) under that fair and green-leaved tree (под тем красивым зеленым деревом: «деревом с зеленой листвой»; green — зеленый, leaf (мн.ч. leaves) — лист, листва, leaved — имеющий форму листа; покрытый листьями, в листве). Come, let us drive her hence (пойдем, прогоним-ка ее отсюда прочь; hence — с этих пор; уст. отсюда), for she is ugly and ill-favoured (ведь она уродлива и отвратительна).'

So he came near (и вот он подошел ближе) and threw stones at her (и /стал/ бросать в нее камни; to throw (threw, thrown)), and mocked her (и насмехаться над ней), and she looked at him (и она смотрела на него) with terror in her eyes (с страхом/ужасом в глазах), nor did she move her gaze from him (но она не отводила от него своего пристального взгляда).

But when the Star-Child saw her, he said to his companions, 'See! There sitteth a foul beggar-woman under that fair and green-leaved tree. Come, let us drive her hence, for she is ugly and ill-favoured.'

So he came near and threw stones at her, and mocked her, and she looked at him with terror in her eyes, nor did she move her gaze from him.

And when the Woodcutter (и когда Дровосек), who was cleaving logs in a haggard hard by (и когда дровосек, который колол дрова недалеко от своего дома; to cleave — раскалывать), saw what the Star-Child was doing (увидел, что делал Звездный Мальчик), he ran up (он подбежал; to run (ran, run)) and rebuked him (и стал отчитывать его; to rebuke — упрекать; делать выговор), and said to him: 'Surely thou art hard of heart (вот уж верно, что у тебя жестокое сердце; thou art = you are) and knowest not mercy (и не знаешь сострадания/милосердия; knowest = know), for what evil (что дурного: «какое зло») has this poor woman done to thee (сделала тебе эта бедная женщина; thee = you) that thou shouldst treat her in this wise (что ты обращаешься с ней таким образом; shouldst = should; wise — способ)?'

And the Star-Child grew red with anger (и Звездный Ребенок покраснел от гнева; to grow (grew, grown) — расти; становиться, делаться), and stamped his foot upon the ground (и топнул ногой о землю), and said, 'Who art thou to question me (кто ты такой, чтобы задавать мне вопросы о том; art thou = are you) what I do (что я делаю)? I am no son of thine (я не твой сын; thine = yours) to do thy bidding (чтобы исполнять твои приказания; bidding — предложение цены; приказание, распоряжение; thy = your).'

And when the Woodcutter, who was cleaving logs in a hangar hard by, saw what the Star-Child was doing, he ran up and rebuked him, and said to him: 'Surely thou art hard of heart and knowest not mercy, for what evil has this poor woman done to thee that thou shouldst treat her in this wise?'

And the Star-Child grew red with anger, and stamped his foot upon the ground, and said, 'Who art thou to question me what I do? I am no son of thine to do thy bidding.'
