They were not their families, nor their wives, nor their servants; the relationship was peculiar, and so unlike anything known to us that it is most difficult to describe. All property among the green Martians is owned in common by the community, except the personal weapons, ornaments and sleeping silks and furs of the individuals. These alone can one claim undisputed right to, nor may he accumulate more of these than are required for his actual needs. The surplus he holds merely as custodian, and it is passed on to the younger members of the community as necessity demands.

The women and children of a man's retinue may be likened to a military unit for which he is responsible in various ways, as in matters of instruction, discipline, sustenance, and the exigencies of their continual roamings and their unending strife with other communities and with the red Martians. His women are in no sense wives. The green Martians use no word corresponding in meaning with this earthly word. Their mating is a matter of community interest solely, and is directed without reference to natural selection. The council of chieftains of each community controls the matter as surely as the owner of a Kentucky racing stud directs the scientific breeding of his stock for the improvement of the whole.
In theory it may sound well (в теории это может звучать хорошо), as is often the case with theories (как это часто бывает с теориями), but the result of ages of this unnatural practice (однако результат этой многовековой неестественной практики), coupled with the community interest in the offspring being held paramount to that of the mother (в сочетании с тем, что интерес общины в /отношении/ потомства стоит выше интересов матери; to couple — соединять; связывать; paramount — первостепенный; верховный), is shown in the cold, cruel creatures (проявился в этих холодных, жестоких созданиях), and their gloomy, loveless, mirthless existence (и их мрачном, лишенном любви и веселья существовании).

It is true that the green Martians are absolutely virtuous (это правда, что зеленые марсиане совершенно добродетельны; virtuous — добродетельный), both men and women, with the exception of such degenerates as Tal Hajus (как мужчины, так и женщины, за исключением таких выродков, как Тал Хаджус); but better far a finer balance of human characteristics (но гораздо лучше было бы, если бы к ним добавились: «/соблюдался/более тонкий баланс» человеческие свойства) even at the expense of a slight and occasional loss of chastity (даже

Finding that I must assume responsibility for these creatures (понимая, что я должен принять /на себя/ ответственность за этих созданий), whether I would or not (хочу я этого или нет), I made the best of it (я не стал падать духом; to make the best of it — мужественно переносить, не падать духом: «делать лучшее из этого») and directed them to find quarters on the upper floors (и отправил их искать жилье на верхних этажах), leaving the third floor to me (оставив третий этаж для себя). One of the girls I charged with the duties of my simple cuisine (на одну из девушек я возложил заботу о моей несложной кухне; to charge with — вменить в обязанность), and directed the others to take up the various activities (а другим дал указание приступить к тем разнообразным занятиям) which had formerly constituted their vocations (которые ранее составляли их профессию; vocation — призвание; профессия). Thereafter I saw little of them, nor did I care to (после этого я их почти не видел, да и не стремился к этому; to care — иметь желание, хотеть).

CHAPTER XIII
Following the battle with the air ships (после битвы с воздушными кораблями), the community remained within the city for several days (община оставалась в пределах города несколько дней), abandoning the homeward march until they could feel reasonably assured (отказавшись от похода домой до тех пор, пока они не смогут быть достаточно уверены; to abandon — отказываться, оставлять; homeward — ведущий к дому; reasonably — разумно; довольно, достаточно) that the ships would not return (что корабли не вернутся); for to be caught on the open plains with a cavalcade of chariots and children (так как быть захваченными на открытых равнинах с кавалькадой повозок и детей) was far from the desire of even so warlike a people as the green Martians (совсем не соответствовало желаниям даже такого воинственного народа, как зеленые марсиане).
During our period of inactivity (во время нашего периода бездействия), Tars Tarkas had instructed me in many of the customs and arts of war familiar to the Tharks (Тарс Таркас обучил меня многим традициям и боевым искусствам, известным таркам; familiar — хорошо знакомый; привычный), including lessons in riding and guiding the great beasts which bore the warriors (включая уроки верховой езды и управления огромными животными, которые возили воинов; to bear — носить). These creatures, which are known as thoats (эти создания, известные как тоты), are as dangerous and vicious as their masters (столь же опасны и злобны, как и их хозяева), but when once subdued (но как только их усмирят; to subdue — покорять, подчинять) are sufficiently tractable for the purposes of the green Martians (становятся достаточно послушными для надобностей зеленых марсиан; tractable — послушный).
