‘Excellent!’ said Slow-and-Solid. ‘A little more attention to holding your breath and you will be able to keep house at the bottom of the turbid Amazon. Now I’ll try that exercise of wrapping my hind legs round my ears which you say is so peculiarly comfortable. Won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised!’
‘Excellent!’ said Stickly-Prickly. ‘But it’s straining your back-plates a little. They are all overlapping now, instead of lying side by side.’
‘Oh, that’s the result of exercise (ах,
‘Am I?’ said Stickly-Prickly (правда? — спросил Колючки-Торчком). ‘That comes from my soaking in the water (это происходит из-за моего намокания = из-за того, что я мокну в воде). Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised (ох, то-то удивится Пестрый Ягуар)!’
result [rI'zAlt], exercise ['eksqsaIz], soak [squk]
‘Oh, that’s the result of exercise,’ said Slow-and-Solid. ‘I’ve noticed that your prickles seem to be melting into one another, and that you’re growing to look rather more like a pine-cone, and less like a chestnut-burr, than you used to.’
‘Am I?’ said Stickly-Prickly. ‘That comes from my soaking in the water. Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised!’
They went on with their exercises (они продолжали свои упражнения), each helping the other (помогая друг другу), till morning came (до наступления утра); and when the sun was high (и когда солнце стояло высоко) they rested and dried themselves (они стали отдыхать и сушиться). Then they saw (потом они увидели) that they were both of them quite different from what they had been (что они оба стали совершенно отличаться от того, какими они были /раньше/).
‘Stickly-Prickly (Колючки-Торчком),’ said Tortoise after breakfast (сказала Черепаха после завтрака), ‘I am not what I was yesterday (я не то, чем была вчера [86] ); but I think that I may yet amuse Painted Jaguar (но я думаю, что я все-таки могу позабавить Пестрого Ягуара).’

‘Stickly-Prickly,’ said Tortoise after breakfast, ‘I am not what I was yesterday; but I think that I may yet amuse Painted Jaguar.’
‘That was the very thing I was thinking just now (именно об этом я как раз и думал),’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком). ‘I think scales are a tremendous improvement on prickles (я считаю, чешуя — потрясающее усовершенствование колючек) — to say nothing of being able to swim (не говоря уже об умении плавать). Oh, won’t Painted Jaguar be surprised (ах, то-то удивится Пестрый Ягуар)! Let’s go and find him (давай пойдем /и/ найдем его).’
By and by they found Painted Jaguar (вскоре они нашли Пестрого Ягуара; by and by — вскоре), still nursing his paddy-paw (все еще баюкающего свою лапу-лапочку) that had been hurt the night before (которую поранил прошлой ночью). He was so astonished (он был так изумлен) that he fell three times backward over his own painted tail without stopping (что перекувырнулся три раза задом наперед через свой собственный пестрый хвост без остановки).

‘Good morning (доброе утро)!’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком).
‘And how is your dear gracious Mummy this morning (а как поживает = чувствует себя твоя дорогая снисходительная Мамочка сегодня утром)?’
‘She is quite well, thank you (спасибо, она чувствует себя очень хорошо),’ said Painted Jaguar (сказал Пестрый Ягуар); ‘but you must forgive me (но вы должны простить меня) if I do not at this precise moment recall your name (если я не припомню в данный момент ваше имя).’
‘That’s unkind of you (это нелюбезно с твоей стороны),’ said Stickly-Prickly (сказал Колючки-Торчком), ‘seeing that this time yesterday (принимая во внимание, что вчера в это время) you tried to scoop me out of my shell with your paw (ты попытался выскрести меня из моего панциря своей лапой).’
