encouraged [ɪn`kʌrɪʤd] appearance [ə`pɪərəns] whither [`wɪðə] hearken [`hɑ:kən]
The hamlet lay not many hundred yards away though out of view, on the other side of the next cove; and what greatly encouraged me, it was in an opposite direction from that whence the blind man had made his appearance, and whither he had presumably returned. We were not many minutes on the road, though we sometimes stopped to lay hold of each other and hearken. But there was no unusual sound — nothing but the low wash of the ripple and the croaking of the inmates of the wood.
It was already candle-light (было уже свечное освещение = уже зажгли свечи) when we reached the hamlet (когда мы достигли деревушки), and I shall never forget how much I was cheered to see the yellow shine in doors and windows (и я никогда не забуду, как сильно был рад видеть желтый свет в дверях и окнах; to cheer — приветствовать, ободрять,
The more we told of our troubles (чем больше мы рассказывали о наших волнениях), the more — man, woman, and child (тем больше /все/ — мужчины, женщины и дети) — they clung to the shelter of their houses (льнули к своим углам; to cling to — прилегать, прильнуть; shelter — приют, кров, убежище). The name of Captain Flint (имя капитана Флинта), though it was strange to me (хотя оно было неизвестно мне), was well enough known to some there (было довольно хорошо известно многим там), and carried a great weight of terror (и приводило их в ужас; to carry weight — иметь вес, влияние). Some of the men who had been to field-work on the far side of the “Admiral Benbow” (некоторые /из мужчин/, которые работали в поле вдалеке от «Адмирала Бенбоу»; far side — противоположная сторона, дальняя сторона) remembered, besides, to have seen several strangers on the road (вспомнили, помимо всего прочего, что видели несколько незнакомцев на дороге), and, taking them to be smugglers (и, принимая их за контрабандистов), to have bolted away (поспешили /домой/; to bolt — нестись стрелой, удирать) and one at least had seen a little lugger in what we called Kitt’s Hole (и один /из них/, по крайней мере, видел люггер в /бухте/, которую мы называем Киттова Дыра; lugger — люггер /парусное судно с двумя или тремя мачтами, названо так из-за способа, которым подвешены паруса/). For that matter (в связи с этим), anyone who was a comrade of that captain’s (/упоминания о/ любом, кто был приятелем того капитана) was enough to frighten them to death (было достаточно, чтобы напугать их до смерти). And the short and the long of the matter was (в общем; the long and the short — самая суть, основное: «долгое и краткое дела/материи»), that while we could get several (в то время как мы могли взять = нашлось несколько /человек/) who were willing enough to ride to Dr Livesey’s which lay in another direction (которые хотели = соглашались вполне поехать к /дому/ доктора Ливси, лежавшему в другой стороне), not one would help us to defend the inn (ни один не захотел помочь нам защитить трактир).
shine [ʃaɪn] quarter [`kwɔ:tə] troubles [`trʌblz] smuggler [`smʌglə] comrade [`kɔmreɪd]
It was already candle-light when we reached the hamlet, and I shall never forget how much I was cheered to see the yellow shine in doors and windows; but that was the best of the help we were likely to get in that quarter for — you would have thought men would have been ashamed of themselves — no soul would consent to return with us to the “Admiral Benbow.”
The more we told of our troubles, the more — man, woman, and child — they clung to the shelter of their houses. They say cowardice is infectious (говорят, трусость заразительна; coward — трус); but then argument is, on the other hand, a great emboldener (но ведь довод/аргумент/спор, с другой стороны, придает силы: «великий поддерживатель»; to embolden — подбодрять, давать смелость; bold — отважный, смелый); and so when each had said his say (поэтому когда каждый сказал, что думает = все отказались идти; to say say — высказывать все, что думаешь), my mother made them a speech (моя мать выступила: «сделала им речь»). She would not, she declared, lose money (она
cowardice [`kauədɪs] declared [dɪ`kleəd] hulking [`hʌlkɪŋ] lawful [`lɔ:ful]
They say cowardice is infectious; but then argument is, on the other hand, a great emboldener; and so when each had said his say, my mother made them a speech. She would not, she declared, lose money that belonged to her fatherless boy; “if none of the rest of you dare,” she said, “Jim and I dare. Back we will go, the way we came, and small thanks to you big, hulking, chicken-hearted men. We’ll have that chest open, if we die for it. And I’ll thank you for that bag, Mrs Crossley, to bring back our lawful money in.”
Of course, I said I would go with my mother (конечно, я сказал, что пойду с матерью); and of course they all cried out at our foolhardiness (и конечно, они все закричали о нашей безрассудной храбрости; foolhardy — необдуманно смелый, безрассудно храбрый; авантюрный); but even then not a man would go along with us (но даже тогда ни один человек /не согласился/ сопровождать нас; to go along — сопровождать). All they would do was to give me a loaded pistol (все что они сделали — дали мне заряженный пистолет), lest we were attacked (на случай нападения на нас; lest — как бы не); and to promise to have horses ready saddled (и пообещали держать наготове оседланных лошадей), in case we were pursued on our return (на тот случай, если нас будут преследовать на нашем обратном пути); while one lad was to ride forward to the doctor’s (в то время как один парень должен был поскакать к доктору; forward — вперед, дальше) in search of armed assistance (в поисках вооруженной помощи; assistance — содействие, подмога, поддержка).
foolhardiness [`fu:l,hɑ:dɪnɪs] pursued [pə`sju:əd] search [sə:ʧ] assistance [ə`sɪstəns]
Of course, I said I would go with my mother; and of course they all cried out at our foolhardiness; but even then not a man would go along with us. All they would do was to give me a loaded pistol, lest we were attacked; and to promise to have horses ready saddled, in case we were pursued on our return; while one lad was to ride forward to the doctor’s in search of armed assistance.
My heart was beating finely (мое сердце колотилось бешено; finely — хорошо, превосходно; зд. изрядно, как следует) when we two set forth in the cold night upon this dangerous venture (когда мы вдвоем отправились холодной ночью в это опасное приключение; venture — авантюра, рискованное предприятие, опасная затея). A full moon was beginning to rise (полная луна начинала подниматься = всходила) and peered redly through the upper edges of the fog (и краснела через верхние края тумана = над горизонтом; to peer — выглядывать, показаться; redly — красновато), and this increased our haste (и это ускоряло нашу спешку), for it was plain (так как было ясно; plain — плоский; очевидный), before we came forth again (прежде чем мы двинемся назад; to come forth — выдвигаться, показываться), that all would be as bright as day (что все = кругом будет светло, как днем), and our departure exposed to the eyes of any watchers (и наше отправление будет открыто для глаз любого наблюдателя; departure — отправление, отъезд, уход; to expose — выставлять, раскрывать). We slipped along the hedges (мы проскользнули мимо изгородей; hedge — /живая/ изгородь, забор), noiseless and swift (бесшумно и быстро; noise — шум), nor did we see or hear anything to increase our terrors (мы ни видели, ни слышали ничего, /что могло бы/ усилить наши страхи), till, to our relief, the door of the “Admiral Benbow” had closed behind us (пока, к нашему облегчению, дверь «Адмирала Бенбоу» не закрылась за нами).
