"I think I could jump over it," said the Cowardly Lion, after measuring the distance carefully in his mind.
"Then we are all right," answered the Scarecrow, "for you can carry us all over on your back, one at a time."
"Well, I'll try it," said the Lion. "Who will go first?"
"I will," declared the Scarecrow, "for, if you found that you could not jump over the gulf, Dorothy would be killed, or the Tin Woodman badly dented on the rocks below. But if I am on your back it will not matter so much, for the fall would not hurt me at all."

The Scarecrow sat upon the Lion's back (Страшила уселся на спину Льву), and the big beast walked to the edge of the gulf and crouched down (и большой зверь подошел к краю пропасти и прижался к земле; to crouch — присесть, припасть к земле; сжаться /чаще о животных/).
"Why don't you run and jump (а почему ты не разбегаешься и не прыгаешь)?" asked the Scarecrow.
"Because that isn't the way we Lions do these things (потому что мы, Львы, так не поступаем: «это не способ, которым мы, львы, выполняем такие вещи»)," he replied.
Then giving a great spring, he shot through the air (затем, огромным прыжком он пронесся по воздуху; spring — прыжок, скачок; to shoot — стрелять, вести огонь; пронестись, промчаться) and landed safely on the other side (и благополучно приземлился на другой стороне). They were all greatly pleased to see how easily he did it (все они были чрезвычайно обрадованы, увидев, насколько легко он это сделал), and after the Scarecrow had got down from his back the Lion sprang across the ditch again (и после того как Страшила слез с его спины, Лев снова прыгнул через канаву).

Dorothy thought she would go next (Дороти подумала, что она будет: «пойдет» следующей); so she took Toto in her arms and climbed on the Lion's back (поэтому она взяла Тото на руки и влезла на спину Льва), holding tightly to his mane with one hand (крепко держась одной рукой за его гриву; tightly — туго; крепко, накрепко). The next moment it seemed as if she were flying through the air (в следующее мгновение /ей/ показалось, словно она летела по воздуху); and then, before she had time to think about it (и затем, прежде чем она успела: «прежде чем у нее было время» подумать об этом), she was safe on the other side (она благополучно оказалась на другой стороне /канавы/; safe — безопасный, находящийся в безопасности). The Lion went back a third time and got the Tin Woodman (Лев вернулся в третий раз и перенес Железного Дровосека), and then they all sat down for a few moments to give the beast a chance to rest (и затем они все присели на несколько мгновений, чтобы дать зверю возможность отдохнуть), for his great leaps had made his breath short (потому что его огромные прыжки участили его дыхание: «сделали его дыхание коротким»), and he panted like a big dog that has been running too long (и он тяжело

They found the forest very thick on this side (они обнаружили, что лес был очень густым на этой стороне /канавы/), and it looked dark and gloomy (и выглядел он темным и мрачным; gloom — мрак, темнота; мрачность, уныние). After the Lion had rested they started along the road of yellow brick (после того как Лев отдохнул, они тронулись в путь по дороге из желтого кирпича), silently wondering (молча раздумывая), each in his own mind (каждый про себя: «в своем собственном уме»), if ever they would come to the end of the woods and reach the bright sunshine again (дойдут ли они когда-нибудь до конца этого леса и доберутся ли снова до яркого солнечного света). To add to their discomfort (вдобавок к их /и без того/ стесненному положению; to add — прибавлять, присоединять; discomfort — неудобство; лишения, стесненное положение), they soon heard strange noises in the depths of the forest (они вскоре услышали странные звуки в чаще леса; noise — шум, гам, грохот, неприятный звук; depth — глубина; середина, центр; the depths of the woods — чаща леса), and the Lion whispered to them that it was in this part of the country that the Kalidahs lived (а Лев прошептал им, что это было в той части страны, где жили Калиды).
"What are the Kalidahs (а кто такие эти Калиды)?" asked the girl.

"What are the Kalidahs?" asked the girl.
"They are monstrous beasts with bodies like bears and heads like tigers (это чудовищные звери с туловищами, как у медведей, и головами, как у тигров)," replied the Lion, "and with claws so long and sharp (и когтями такими длинными и острыми) that they could tear me in two as easily as I could kill Toto (что они могут разорвать меня на /две/ части так же легко, как я мог бы убить Тото). I'm terribly afraid of the Kalidahs (я ужасно боюсь Калидов)."
"They must be dreadful beasts (они, должно быть, ужасные звери)."
The Lion was about to reply (Лев собирался было ответить) when suddenly they came to another gulf across the road (как неожиданно они подошли к другой пропасти, /идущей/ через дорогу; gulf — морской залив; бездна, пропасть). But this one was so broad and deep (но эта /пропасть/ была столь широкой и глубокой) that the Lion knew at once he could not leap across it (что Лев сразу же понял, что он не сможет перепрыгнуть через нее).
