"Holmes!" I cried — "Holmes!"
"Come out," said he (выходите, — сказал он), "and please be careful with the revolver (и, пожалуйста, будьте осторожны с револьвером)."
I stooped under the rude lintel (/выходя/ я пригнулся под грубой притолокой), and there he sat upon a stone outside (а он сидел на камне снаружи), his grey eyes dancing with amusement (и в его серых глазах заплясали веселые /огоньки/; amusement — увеселение, забава) as they fell upon my astonished features (при виде моего изумленного лица: «когда они упали на мои удивленные черты лица»). He was thin and worn (он /выглядел/ худым и истощенным), but clear and alert (но уверенным и бодрым; clear — чистый; уверенный; alert — бдительный;
believe [b'li:v], ear [], incisive [n'sasv]
FOR a moment or two I sat breathless, hardly able to believe my ears. Then my senses and my voice came back to me, while a crushing weight of responsibility seemed in an instant to be lifted from my soul. That cold, incisive, ironical voice could belong to but one man in all the world.
"Holmes!" I cried — "Holmes!"
"Come out," said he, "and please be careful with the revolver."
I stooped under the rude lintel, and there he sat upon a stone outside, his grey eyes dancing with amusement as they fell upon my astonished features. He was thin and worn, but clear and alert, his keen face bronzed by the sun and roughened by the wind. In his tweed suit and cloth cap he looked like any other tourist upon the moor, and he had contrived, with that cat-like love of personal cleanliness which was one of his characteristics, that his chin should be as smooth and his linen as perfect as if he were in Baker Street.
"I never was more glad (я никогда не был более рад) to see anyone in my life (видеть кого-нибудь за всю жизнь)," said I, as I wrung him by the hand (сказал я, пожимая ему руку; to wring — крутить; пожимать /руку/).
"Or more astonished, eh (или более изумлен, а)?"
"Well, I must confess to it (да, должен признаться в этом)."
"The surprise was not all on one side (/это/ было неожиданностью не только для вас: «не все удивление было с одной стороны»), I assure you (уверяю вас). I had no idea (я и не предполагал: «у меня не было мысли») that you had found my occasional retreat (что вы обнаружите мое временное убежище; occasional — случающийся редко; retreat — отступление; убежище, пристанище), still less that you were inside it (а тем более, застать вас здесь: «чтобы вы были внутри»; still less — тем более), until I was within twenty paces of the door (пока не оказался в двадцати шагах от входа)."
"My footprint, I presume (следы моих /ботинок/, я полагаю)?"
"No, Watson; I fear that I could not undertake (боюсь, что не смогу гарантировать /того/; to undertake — предпринимать; гарантировать) to recognise your footprint amid all the footprints of the world (что распознаю ваши следы среди всех остальных в мире). If you seriously desire to deceive me (если вы всерьез захотите меня обмануть) you must change your tobacconist (вы должны сменить табачную лавку; tobacconist — торговец табачными изделиями); for when I see the stub of a cigarette marked Bradley, Oxford Street (потому что, когда я вижу окурок папиросы с маркой "Брэдли, Оксфорд-стрит"), I know that my friend Watson is in the neighbourhood (я знаю, что мой друг Ватсон находится неподалеку: «по соседству»). You will see it there beside the path (вы
"Exactly (совершенно верно)."
astonish [s'tn], presume [pr'zju:m], change [tend]
"I never was more glad to see anyone in my life," said I, as I wrung him by the hand.

"Well, I must confess to it."
"The surprise was not all on one side, I assure you. I had no idea that you had found my occasional retreat, still less that you were inside it, until I was within twenty paces of the door."

If you seriously desire to deceive me you must change your tobacconist; for when I see the stub of a cigarette marked Bradley, Oxford Street, I know that my friend Watson is in the neighbourhood. You will see it there beside the path. You threw it down, no doubt, at that supreme moment when you charged into the empty hut."
"Exactly."
"I thought as much (именно это я и подумал; as much — не меньше; именно это; to think) — and knowing your admirable tenacity (и зная ваше поразительное упорство) I was convinced that you were sitting in ambush (я был убежден, что вы сидите в засаде), a weapon within reach (с оружием под рукой; within reach — неподалеку: «в досягаемости»; to reach — протягивать /напр., руку/), waiting for the tenant to return (и поджидаете возвращения хозяина). So you actually thought that I was the criminal (значит, вы и вправду думали, что я преступник)?"
"I did not know who you were (я не знал, кто вы такой), but I was determined to find out (но я решил /это/ выяснить)."
"Excellent, Watson (превосходно, Ватсон)! And how did you localize me (а как вы определили мое местонахождение; to localize — локализовать; определять местонахождение)? You saw me, perhaps, on the night of the convict hunt (возможно, вы видели меня в ночь, /когда/ гонялись за каторжником), when I was so imprudent (когда я был столь неосторожен) as to allow the moon to rise behind me (что позволил луне подняться позади себя)?"
"Yes, I saw you then (да, я видел вас тогда)."
"And have, no doubt, searched all the huts (и, несомненно, обыскали все хижины) until you came to this one (пока не пришли = не наткнулись на эту)?"
"No, your boy had been observed (нет, за вашим мальчишкой наблюдали), and that gave me a guide where to look (и это дало мне подсказку, где искать; guide — проводник; ориентир)."
"The old gentleman with the telescope, no doubt (пожилой джентльмен с телескопом, несомненно). I could not make it out (я не мог понять, что это) when first I saw the light flashing upon the lens (когда в первый раз увидел отблески света на линзах; to flash — сверкать; давать отблески)." He rose and peeped into the hut (он поднялся и заглянул в хижину; to rise). "Ha, I see that Cartwright has brought up some supplies (ха, я вижу, Картрайт принес кое-какие продукты; to bring; supplies — припасы; продовольствие). What's this paper (что за бумажка)? So you have been to Coombe Tracey, have you (значит, вы были в Кум-Трэйси, не так ли)?"
"Yes."
"To see Mrs. Laura Lyons (/чтобы/ встретиться с миссис Лорой Лайонс)?"
"Exactly (совершенно верно)."
ambush ['aembu], weapon ['wepn], localize ['luklaz]
