The men whom we pursued seemed to have taken a curiously zigzag road (казалось, что наши преследуемые: «люди, которых мы преследовали» выбрали до странного извилистый путь), with the idea probably of escaping observation (по-видимому, надеясь: «с мыслью, возможно» сбить со следа; to escape — бежать; избежать; observation — наблюдение). We had traversed Streatham, Brixton, Camberwell, and now found ourselves in Kennington Lane, having borne away through the side-streets to the east of the Oval. The men whom we pursued seemed to have taken a curiously zigzag road, with the idea probably of escaping observation. They had never kept to the main road if a parallel side-street would serve their turn. At the foot of Kennington Lane they had edged away to the left through Bond Street and Miles Street. Where the latter street turns into Knight's Place, Toby ceased to advance, but began to run backwards and forwards with one ear cocked and the other drooping, the very picture of canine indecision. Then he waddled round in circles, looking up to us from time to time, as if to ask for sympathy in his embarrassment.
"What the deuce is the matter with the dog?" growled Holmes (что это, черт возьми, случилось с собакой? — проворчал Холмс; what is the matter — что случилось; deuce — черт, дьявол; to growl — рычать; ворчать). "They surely would not take a cab, or go off in a balloon (не взяли же они кеб и не улетели на воздушном шаре; surely — конечно; off — указывает на отдаление, удаление)."
"Perhaps they stood here for some time," I suggested (возможно, они стояли здесь какое-то время, — предложил я).
"Ah! it's all right (а, все в порядке). He's off again," said my companion, in a tone of relief (он опять взял след, — сказал мой компаньон с облегчением в голосе; to be off — уходить, покидать; отправляться; tone — звук, тон; интонация).
He was indeed off, for after sniffing round again he suddenly made up his mind (он и в самом деле взял след, так как понюхав тут и там в очередной раз, он внезапно решился; to sniff — нюхать; принюхиваться; to make up one's mind — решиться), and darted away with an energy and determination such as he had not yet shown (и бросился прочь с энергией и решительностью, каких он еще не показывал; to dart — резкое движение; резкое отклонение; dart — дротик; to show — показывать). The scent appeared to be much hotter than before (след казался намного более свежим теперь, чем раньше), for he had not even to put his nose on the ground (так как он даже не опускал носа к земле), but tugged at his leash and tried to break into a run (но натягивал поводок, порываясь пуститься бегом; to tug — тащить, дергать с усилием; тянуть; to try — старатся, пытаться). I could see by the gleam in Holmes's eyes that he thought we were nearing the end of our journey (я мог видеть по заблестевшим глазам Холмса, что он считал, что мы приближаемся к концу нашего путешествия).

Sherlock Holmes and I looked blankly at each other (Шерлок Холмс и я недоумевающее посмотрели друг на друга; blank — пустой, чистый; озадаченный, полностью сбитый с толку), and then burst simultaneously into an uncontrollable fit of laughter (а затем одновременно закатились неудержимым смехом; to burst — лопаться; разрываться; to burst into — внезапно или бурно начинать; uncontrollable — неконтролируемый; неудержимый; fit — припадок, приступ).

Our course now ran down Nine Elms until we came to Broderick and Nelson's large timber-yard, just past the White Eagle tavern. Here the dog, frantic with excitement, turned down through the side-gate into the enclosure, where the sawyers were already at work. On the dog raced through sawdust and shavings, down an alley, round a passage, between two wood-piles, and finally, with a triumphant yelp, sprang upon a large barrel which still stood upon the hand-trolley on which it had been brought. With lolling tongue and blinking eyes, Toby stood upon the cask, looking from one to the other of us for some sign of appreciation. The staves of the barrel and the wheels of the trolley were smeared with a dark liquid, and the whole air was heavy with the smell of creosote.
Sherlock Holmes and I looked blankly at each other, and then burst simultaneously into an uncontrollable fit of laughter.
CHAPTER VIII. THE BAKER STREET IRREGULARS

"WHAT now?" I asked (и что теперь? — спросил я). "Toby has lost his character for infallibility (Тоби утратил свою репутацию непогрешимого следопыта; to lose — терять; character — характер; репутация; infallibility — непогрешимость; infallible — не допускающий ошибок, безошибочный, непогрешимый)."
"He acted according to his lights," said Holmes (он действовал в соответствии со своими понятиями, — сказал Холмс; lights — понятия, представления человека), lifting him down from the barrel and walking him out of the timber-yard (снимая его с бочки и ведя к выходу: «выводя» со склада; to lift — поднимать; to lift down — снимать; to walk — идти, ходить; выводить). "If you consider how much creosote is carted about London in one day (если вы задумаетесь, сколько креозота перевозится по Лондону за один день; to cart — ехать на телеге; везти в телеге), it is no great wonder that our trail should have been crossed (неудивительно, что наш след пересекся с другим; to cross — пересекать). It is much used now, especially for the seasoning of wood (креозот широко используется теперь, особенно для выдержки древесины; seasoning — выдерживание, высушивание древесины на воздухе). Poor Toby is not to blame (беднягу Тоби нельзя винить)."
