"Yes, there was — face downwards. It crossed my mind like that the old woman might have had to go off sudden by train and forgot to lock shop up."

"Perhaps you picked up the railway guide or moved it along the counter?"

"Didn't touch the b — — thing. I did just what I said."

"And you did not see anyone (и вы не видели кого-нибудь) leaving the shop (выходящим из магазина) before you yourself got there (перед тем, как вы сами туда вошли)?"

"Didn't see any such thing (не

Poirot rose (Пуаро поднялся).

"Nobody is pitching upon you (никто вам /не/ докучает) — yet (пока). Bon soir, Monsieur (фр. доброго вечера, мсье)."

He left the man with his mouth open (он оставил мужчину /сидеть/ с открытым ртом; to leave) and I followed him (и я последовал за ним).

In the street he consulted his watch (на улице он посмотрел на часы). "With great haste, my friend (/если/ поспешим: «с большой спешкой», мой друг), we might manage to catch the train (нам, вероятно, удастся успеть на поезд). Let us dispatch ourselves quickly (давайте быстро отправляться)."

He left the man with his mouth open and I followed him.

VIII. The Second Letter

"Well?" I demanded eagerly (ну что? — нетерпеливо спросил я; eager — страстно желающий, жаждущий).

We were seated in a first-class carriage (мы уселись в вагоне первого класса) which we had to ourselves (который был в нашем распоряжении: «который мы имели только для нас»). The train (поезд), an express (экспресс), had just drawn out of Andover (только что выехал из Эндовера).

"The crime," said Poirot (/это/ преступление), "was committed by a man of medium height (было совершено человеком среднего роста) with red hair (с рыжими волосами) and a cast in the left eye (и косоглазием на левом глазу; cast in the eye — косоглазие; to cast — кидать). He limps slightly on the right foot (он слегка прихрамывает на правую ногу) and has a mole just below the shoulder-blade (и имеет родинку сразу под лопаткой; mole — родинка; крот)."

"Poirot?" I cried (Пуаро? — вскричал я).

For a moment I was completely taken in (на

"Mon ami (друг мой), what will you (что вы /хотите/)? You fix upon me a look of doglike devotion (вы остановили на мне взгляд /полный/ собачей преданности; to devote — посвящать; уделять; жертвовать) and demand of me a pronouncement `a la Sherlock Holmes [14] (и требуете от меня заявлений а ля Шерлок Холмс; to pronounce — произносить)! Now for the truth (теперь, по правде) — I do not know (я не знаю) what the murderer looks like (как выглядит убийца), nor where he lives (ни где он живет), nor how to set hands upon him (ни как его поймать: «наложить на него руки»)."

For a moment I was completely taken in. Then the twinkle in my friend's eye undeceived me.

"Poirot!" I said again, this time in reproach.

"Mon ami, what will you? You fix upon me a look of doglike devotion and demand of me a pronouncement `a la Sherlock Holmes! Now for the truth — I do not know what the murderer looks like, nor where he lives, nor how to set hands upon him."

"If only he had left some clue," I murmured.

"Yes (да), the clue (улику) — it is always the clue that attracts you (вас всегда привлекают улики: «это всегда улика, что вас привлекает»). Alas (увы) that he did not smoke the cigarette (он не выкурил сигарету) and leave the ash (и /не/ оставил пепла), and then step in it with a shoe (и затем не наступил в него туфлей) that has nails of a curious pattern (у которой гвоздики любопытного узора). No (нет) — he is not so obliging (он не такой любезный; to oblige — обязывать; угождать). But at least (но по меньшей мере), my friend (друг мой), you have the railway guide (у вас есть железнодорожный справочник). The A.B.C. («Эй-би-си»), that is a clue for you (вот вам улика)!"
