“It’s a beast of a country,” said the Voice. “And pigs for people.”
“Ain’t it?” said Mr. Thomas Marvel. “Lord! But them boots! It beats it.”
He turned his head over his shoulder to the right (он повернул голову = посмотрел через плечо направо), to look at the boots of his interlocutor (чтобы взглянуть на обувь собеседника) with a view to comparisons (и сравнить /со своей/: «с целью сравнения»; with a view to — сцелью, длятогочтобы), and lo! where the boots of his interlocutor should have been (но /там/, где должна была быть обувь собеседника; lo —
“Where are yer (где же вы; yer = you)?” said Mr. Thomas Marvel over his shoulder and coming on all fours (спросил мистер Марвел через плечо и вставая на четвереньки). He saw a stretch of empty downs (он видел гряду пустых холмов; stretch — пространство, участок, отрезок) with the wind swaying the remote green-pointed furze bushes (и как ветер качает далекие кусты дрока в зеленых пятнах).
“Am I drunk (я пьян; to drink-drank-drunk)?” said Mr. Marvel. “Have I had visions (были ли у меня видения = померещилось это мне; vision— зрение; видение, мечта)? Was I talking to myself (может, я говорил сам с собой)? What the — (что за…)”
“Don’t be alarmed (не пугайтесь; toalarm— поднять тревогу; взволновать; напугать),” said a Voice.

“Where are yer?” said Mr. Thomas Marvel over his shoulder and coming on all fours. He saw a stretch of empty downs with the wind swaying the remote green-pointed furze bushes.

“None of your ventriloquising me (бросьте ваши фокусы; to ventriloquize — чревовещать; none of your games — бросьте ваши штучки!, без фокусов!: «никаких ваших игр»),” said Mr. Thomas Marvel, rising sharply to his feet (сказал мистер Марвел, резко вставая на ноги). “Where are yer (где же вы)? Alarmed, indeed (вот уж «не пугайтесь»)!”
“Don’t be alarmed (не пугайтесь),” repeated the Voice (повторил Голос).
“You’ll be alarmed in a minute, you silly fool (сейчас ты испугаешься, болван ты этакий; silly — глупый, дурацкий; fool — дурак; глупец; болван),” said Mr. Thomas Marvel. “Where are yer? Lemme get my mark on yer (вот только тебя найду…; lemme = let me; to mark — ставитьметку, обозначать; выслеживать/дичь/)...

There was no answer (ответа не было). Mr. Thomas Marvel stood bootless and amazed (Томас Марвел стоял, босоногий и изумленный), his jacket nearly thrown off (в почти упавшем пиджаке = распахнутом пиджаке; to throw off —снимать, сбрасывать).
“Peewit (чьи-вы),” said a peewit, very remote (крикнул чибис очень далеко; peewit — чибис; крикчибиса).
“Peewit, indeed (вот тебе и «чьи-вы»)!” said Mr. Thomas Marvel. “This ain’t no time for foolery (не время для дурачества; ain’t — зд. isn’t).”
The down was desolate (холм был безлюдным), east and west, north and south (на востоке и западе, севере и юге); the road with its shallow ditches and white bordering stakes (дорога с мелкими канавами и белыми придорожными столбами; to border — граничитьс; обрамлять, окаймлять; stake — столб, кол), ran smooth and empty north and south (тянулась, ровная и пустынная, на север и юг), and, save for that peewit (и, кроме чибиса), the blue sky was empty too (в голубом небе тоже никого не было; empty — пустой; необитаемый).
“So help me (ей-богу),” said Mr. Thomas Marvel, shuffling his coat on to his shoulders again (сказал мистер Марвел, снова набрасывая пиджак на плечи; to shuffle — шаркать; перемешивать; перемещаться; to shuffle on — накидывать/одежду/). “It’s the drink (это все спиртное; drink— питье, напиток; алкогольный напиток)!
