That picture in a flower-painted frame now adorned the table of her little flat. It showed Mrs. Harris of thirty years ago, a tiny, thin-looking girl whose plain features were enhanced by the freshness of youth. Her hair was short-bobbed, the fashion of the day, and she wore a white muslin wedding dress tiered somewhat in the manner of a Chinese pagoda. In her posture there was already some hint of the courage and independence she was to display later when she became widowed.
The expression on her face was one of pride in the man she had captured (выражение ее лица было выражением гордости за мужчину, которого она завоевала; to capture —

The expression on her face was one of pride in the man she had captured and who stood beside her, a nice-looking boy somewhat on the short side, wearing a dark suit and his hair carefully plastered down. As was becoming to his new status, he looked terrified. And thereafter nobody had ever again troubled to reproduce Mrs. Harris, nor had she so much as thought about it.
"Won't it cost a packet (разве это не будет дорого стоить: «не будет стоить пакет /денег/»; packet — пакет; куча денег)?" was Mrs. Butterfield's reaction to the dark side of things (была реакция миссис Баттерфилд на темную сторону вопроса).
"Ten bob for 'arf a dozen (десять шиллингов за половину дюжины; 'arf = half)," Mrs. Harris reported (сообщила миссис Харрис). "I saw an ad in the paper (я видела объявление в газете; ad = advertisement — объявление, реклама). I'll give you one of the extra ones if you like (я дам тебе одну из оставшихся: «лишних/дополнительных», если хочешь)."
"That's good of you, dearie (ты так добра, дорогая)," said Mrs. Butterfield, and meant it (сказала миссис Баттерфилд совершенно серьезно; to mean smth. — иметь что-л. в виду; быть серьезным по поводу чего-л.).

"Ow Lor' (о Господи; Lor' = Lord)!" The exclamation was torn from Mrs. Harris (восклицание вырвалось: «было вырвано» у миссис Харрис; to tear — рвать) as she was suddenly driven by a new thought (когда ее посетила новая мысль: «когда она была внезапно приведена в движение новой мыслью»). "Ow Lor'!" she repeated (повторила она). "If I'm going to 'ave me photograff tyken (если я собираюсь фотографироваться) I'll 'ave to 'ave a new 'at (я должна иметь = у меня должна быть новая шляпа)."
Two of Mrs. Butterfield's chins (два из подбородков миссис Баттерфилд) quivered at the impact of this revelation (вздрогнули под влиянием этого открытия). "Of course you will, dearie (конечно, дорогая), and that will cost a packet (и это будет стоить кучу денег)."

errand ['erqnd], doubt [daut], guinea ['gInI]
Mrs. Harris accepted the fact philosophically and even with some pleasure. It had been years since she had invested in a new hat. "It carn't be 'elped."
The pair selected the following Saturday afternoon, invading the King's Road to accomplish both errands, beginning, of course, with the choice of the hat. There was no doubt but that Mrs. Harris fell in love with it immediately she saw it in the window, but at first turned resolutely away for it was priced at a guinea, while all about it were others on sale, specials at ten and six, and even some at seven and six.
But Mrs. Harris would not have been a true London char (но миссис Харрис не была бы истинной лондонской уборщицей) had she not favored the one at a guinea (если бы она не предпочла шляпу за гинею), for it had been thought of (потому что она была придумана), designed and made for members of her profession (разработана и сделана для представителей ее профессии). The hat was a kind of flat sailor affair of green straw (эта шляпа была вроде плоской матросской шапочки из зеленой соломки; sailor — матрос, моряк; affair — дело; штука, нечто), but what made it distinguished was the pink rose on a short but flexible stem (но что делало ее особенной — это розовая роза на коротком, но гибком стебле) that was affixed to the front (которая была прикреплена спереди). It was, of course, her fondness for flowers and the rose (это, конечно, ее любовь к цветам и эта роза) that got Mrs. Harris (убедили миссис Харрис: to get — получить; убедить). They went into the shop (они вошли в магазин) and Mrs. Harris dutifully tried on shapes and materials considered to be within her price range (и миссис Харрис с чувством долга примеряла фасоны и материалы, /которые/ считались в пределах ее диапазона цен), but her thoughts and her eyes kept roving to the window (но ее мысли и ее глаза = взгляд продолжали устремляться к витрине; to rove — скитаться; странствовать; бродить; блуждать /о взгляде, мыслях/) where the hat was displayed (где была выставлена та шляпа). Finally she could contain herself no longer and asked for it (в конце концов, она не могла сдерживаться дольше и попросила ее).
