mean [mi:n], brown [braun], leather ['leD@]
"Still looking for your boot?"
"Yes, sir, and mean to find it."
"But, surely, you said that it was a new brown boot?"
"So it was, sir. And now it's an old black one."
"What! you don't mean to say ——?"
"That's just what I do mean to say. I only had three pairs in the world — the new brown, the old black, and the patent leathers, which I am wearing. Last night they took one of my brown ones, and to-day they have sneaked one of the black. Well, have you got it? Speak out, man, and don't stand staring!"
An agitated German waiter had appeared upon the scene (взволнованный немец-посыльный появился в поле зрения: «на сцене»).
"No, sir; I have made inquiry all over the hotel (нет,
"Well, either that boot comes back before sundown (ну, хорошо, или башмак вернется /на место/ до заката) or I'll see the manager and tell him (или я увижусь с управляющим и скажу ему) that I go right straight out of this hotel (что сей же момент я съеду из этой гостиницы)."
"It shall be found, sir (он найдется, сэр) — I promise you that if you will have a little patience it will be found (я обещаю вам, что если у вас будет немного терпения, он найдется)."
"Mind it is, for it's the last thing of mine (имейте в виду, что это последняя моя вещь) that I'll lose in this den of thieves (которую я теряю в этом воровском притоне). Well, well, Mr. Holmes, you'll excuse my troubling you about such a trifle (вот, мистер Холмс, вы извините меня, что беспокою вас таким пустяком) ——"
"I think it's well worth troubling about (я думаю, это стоит того, чтобы побеспокоиться)."
"Why, you look very serious over it (пожалуй, вы слишком серьезно смотрите на это)."
"How do you explain it (как вы это объясняете)?"
"I just don't attempt to explain it (я даже не пытаюсь это объяснить). It seems the very maddest, queerest thing (кажется, это самая дикая, странная вещь) that ever happened to me (которая когда-либо со мной приключалась)."
"The queerest, perhaps," said Holmes, thoughtfully (возможно, самая странная, — сказал Холмс задумчиво).
"What do you make of it yourself (что вы сами думаете об этом)?"
"Well, I don't profess to understand it yet (ну, я еще не утверждаю, что понял это). This case of yours is very complex, Sir Henry (это ваше дело очень сложное, сэр Генри). When taken in conjunction with your uncle's death (если связать /его/ со смертью вашего дяди) I am not sure that of all the five hundred cases of capital importance (я не уверен, что из пяти сотен дел особой важности; capital — главный; важнейший) which I have handled (с которыми я сталкивался; to handle — управлять; иметь дело) there is one which cuts so deep (есть хоть одно настолько серьезное). But we hold several threads in our hands (но мы держим в руках несколько нитей), and the odds are that one or other of them guides us to the truth (и есть вероятность, что не одна, так другая приведет нас к истине). We may waste time in following the wrong one (мы можем потратить время, следуя не в том /направлении/), but sooner or later we must come upon the right (но рано или поздно мы должны наткнуться на верный /путь/)."

We had a pleasant luncheon (у нас был славный ланч; pleasant — приятный; славный) in which little was said of the business (за которым почти не говорили о деле) which had brought us together (которое свело нас вместе; to bring together — собрать воедино; свести вместе). It was in the private sitting-room to which we afterwards repaired (после мы отправились в номер /сэра Генри/; private — частный, личный; sitting-room — гостиная; to repair — направляться, отправляться) that Holmes asked Baskerville what were his intentions (где Холмс спросил Баскервиля, каковы его намерения).
"To go to Baskerville Hall (поехать в Баскервиль-холл)."
"And when (и когда)?"
"At the end of the week (в конце недели)."
"On the whole," said Holmes (в общем и целом, — сказал Холмс), "I think that your decision is a wise one (я думаю, что это мудрое решение). I have ample evidence (у меня достаточно оснований /считать/; ample — богатый; достаточный; evidence — очевидность; основание) that you are being dogged in London (что в Лондоне за вами следят; to dog — следить /за кем-либо/; преследовать), and amid the millions of this great city (и среди миллионов /жителей/ этого огромного города) it is difficult to discover who these people are or what their object can be (трудно установить, кто эти люди, или какой может быть их цель). If their intentions are evil (если у них дурные намерения) they might do you a mischief (они могут нанести вам вред), and we should be powerless to prevent it (и мы будем бессильны предотвратить его = помешать им). You did not know, Dr. Mortimer (вы не знали = вы не заметили, доктор Мортимер), that you were followed this morning from my house (что этим утром за вами следили после вашего визита ко мне: «от моего дома»)?"
