She seemed rather anxious to excuse and explain her procedure. I just noted the fact without attaching much importance to it.
The letter naturally filled my mind to the exclusion of all else.
Crome was not (Кроум не был), I think (я думаю), any too pleased to see the various participants in the drama (слишком рад видеть стольких различных участников в этой драме). He became extremely official and non-committal (он стал крайне официален и уклончив; to commit — передавать; to commit oneself — связывать себя обязательствами, словом).
"I'll take this with me, M. Poirot (я
"No, no (нет, нет), it is not necessary (это необязательно)."
"What are your plans, inspector?" asked Clarke
"This time we've got to get him," said Clarke "I may tell you, inspector (я могу сказать вам, инспектор), that we've formed an association of our own (что мы сформировали собственную ассоциацию) to deal with the matter (/чтобы/ заняться этим делом). A legion of interested parties (легион заинтересованных сторон)."
Inspector Crome said in his best manner

Crome was not, I think, any too pleased to see the various participants in the drama. He became extremely official and non-committal.
"I'll take this with me, M. Poirot. If you care to make a copy of it —"
"No, no, it is not necessary."
"What are your plans, inspector?" asked Clarke.
"Fairly comprehensive ones, Mr. Clarke."
"This time we've got to get him," said Clarke. "I may tell you, inspector, that we've formed an association of our own to deal with the matter. A legion of interested parties."
Inspector Crome said in his best manner: "Oh, yes?"
"I gather (я делаю вывод; to gather — собирать; делать вывод, умозаключение /from — из чего-л., на основании чего-л./) you don't think much of amateurs, inspector (что вы не очень высокого мнения о любителях, инспектор; to think much of smb. — иметь высокое мнение о ком-либо, ценить)?"
"You've hardly the same resources at your command (у вас вряд ли те же ресурсы в вашем распоряжении), have you, Mr. Clarke (так, мистер Кларк)?"
"We've got a personal axe to grind (мы преследуем личные цели: «у нас есть собственный топор, /чтобы/ его наточить») — and that's something (и это что-то)."
"Oh, yes?"
"I fancy (я представляю) our own task isn't going to be too easy, inspector (что наше собственное задание не будет очень легким, инспектор). In fact (фактически), I rather fancy (я скорее представляю) old A.B.C. has done you again (что старик Эй-би-си опять вас обхитрил)."

Crome, I had noticed, could often be goaded into speech when other methods would have failed.
"I don't fancy (я не представляю) the public will have much to criticize in our arrangements this time," he said (что публике будет что критиковать в наших приготовлениях на этот раз). "The fool has given us ample warning this time (глупец дал нам достаточное предупреждение в этот раз; ample — обширный; богатый; достаточный). The 11th isn't till Wednesday of next week (/разве/ одиннадцатое — это не среда на следующей неделе). That gives ample time for a publicity campaign in the press (это дает достаточно времени для пропагандистской кампании в прессе). Doncaster will be thoroughly warned (Донкастер будет тщательно предупрежден). Every soul whose name begins with a D will be on his or her guard (каждая /живая/ душа, чье имя начинается с «ди», будет настороже) — that's so much to the good (это очень полезно).
Also (также), we'll draft the police into the town on a fairly large scale (мы наводним полицией город в достаточном количестве scale — градация, шкала; размер, протяженность; охват). That's already been arranged for by consent of all the Chief Constables in England The whole of Doncaster (весь Донкастер), police and civilians (полиция и гражданское /население/), will be out to catch one man (выйдут ловить одного человека) — and with reasonable luck (и, при некоторой удаче; reasonable — разумный; приемлемый, сносный), we ought to get him (мы должны взять его)!"
