Now the little Boy Man grew and flourished, and was perfectly happy under the wise guidance of his friend and Elder Brother. Although he had neither father nor mother, and only animals for playmates, it is said that no child born of human parents has ever led so free and happy a life as he. In those days, there was peace between the animals and the Boy Man.

Sometimes they challenged him to friendly contests (иногда они вызывали его на дружеские поединки: «состязания»), whereupon He-who-was-first-Created taught his little brother (вследствие чего Созданный Первым научил своего маленького брата; to teach; whereupon — после чего; вследствие чего) how to outwit them (как перехитрить их; wit — разум, ум) by clever tricks and devices (умными

уловками и обманом/хитростью). This he was often able to do (это ему часто удавалось сделать; to be able to do smth. — суметь что-либо сделать, быть способным что-либо сделать); but not always (но не всегда); for sometimes the animals by their greater strength (так как иногда животные своей превосходящей силой) finally overcame him (в конечном итоге одолевали его; final — конечный, итоговый; finally — в конце концов; to overcome).

Sometimes they challenged him to friendly contests, whereupon He-who-was-first-Created taught his little brother how to outwit them by clever tricks and devices. This he was often able to do; but not always; for sometimes the animals by their greater strength finally overcame him.

One morning the Boy Man went out from his lodge as usual (однажды утром Юный Человек вышел из своего вигвама как обычно) to the day's occupations (чтобы /заняться/ дневными делами: «занятиями»), but did not return at night (но не вернулся /ни/ ночью = вечером) nor for many nights afterward (ни многими ночами после = ни много ночей спустя). He-who-was-first-Created mourned and wailed long for the lost one (Созданный Первым горевал и долго оплакивал потерявшегося/пропавшего). At last he became angry (наконец, он рассердился; to become angry — рассердиться: «стать сердитым»), and set out to look for the bones of his brother (и отправился искать кости своего брата = на поиски костей…; to set out — отправляться; to look for — искать).

He travelled from east to west across the world (он путешествовал с востока на запад через мир = по всему миру), but found no trace of the one (но /не/ нашел ни одного следа того; to find) he sought (/кого/ он искал; to seek), and all of the land creatures (и все земные существа: «и все из земных существ»; land — земля) whom he questioned (кого он спрашивал) declared that they had not seen him pass by (заявляли, что они не видели, чтобы он проходил мимо).

He-who-was-first-Created now turned himself into a King-fisher (Созданный Первым тогда превратился в Верховного Пекана [7] ), and so approached unsuspected (и

таким образом приблизился незаподозренным; to suspect —подозревать) and talked with the old Beaver-woman (и побеседовал со старой Женщиной-Бобром). From her he learned (от нее он узнал) that his younger brother had been enticed into the Great Water (что его младшего брата заманило в Великую Воду: «был заманен в…»; to entice — соблазнять; переманивать) and destroyed by the monster of the deep (и уничтожило/убило чудовище глубин: «и убит чудовищем…»; deep — глубокий), Unk-tay-hee (Унк-тэй-хи). Thereupon he went down to the shore (тогда он спустился к берегу; thereupon — вслед за тем) and changed himself into a tall pine (и превратился: «изменил себя» в высокую сосну) overlooking the lake (возвышающуюся над озером; to overlook — возвышаться /над городом, местностью и т. п./)

He-who-was-first-Created now turned himself into a King-fisher, and so approached unsuspected and talked with the old Beaver-woman. From her he learned that his younger brother had been enticed into the Great Water and destroyed by the monster of the deep, Unk-tay-hee. Thereupon he went down to the shore and changed himself into a tall pine overlooking the lake.

For many moons He-who-was-first-Created remained thus (в течение многих лун = месяцев Созданный Первым оставался так), until at last he beheld two huge forms (пока, наконец, он не узрел две огромные формы = два огромных тела; to behold) rising up in the midst of the waves (поднимающиеся среди волн; to rise up). It was old Unk-tay-hee and his mate (это были Унк-тэй-хи и его подруга).

For many moons He-who-was-first-Created remained thus, until at last he beheld two huge forms rising up in the midst of the waves. The monsters glided gradually toward the shore and lay basking in the sun at his feet, rocking gently with the motion of the quiet water. It was old Unk-tay-hee and his mate.

"Husband (муж /мой/)!" exclaimed the wife (воскликнула жена) of Unk-tay-hee, "for ages this has been our resting-place (целую вечность это было нашим местом отдыха; for ages — целую вечность; to rest — покоиться; отдыхать), and yet I have never seen this tree before (но, однако, я никогда не видела этого дерева раньше)!"

"Woman (женщина/жена), the tree has always been there (дерево всегда было здесь)!" returned the water monster (возразило/ответило водяное чудище).

"But I am sure (но я уверена) it was not here before (его не было здесь раньше)," she insisted (настаивала она).

"Husband!" exclaimed the wife of Unk-tay-hee, "for ages this has been our resting-place, and yet I have never seen this tree before!"

"Woman, the tree has always been there!" returned the water monster.

"But I am sure it was not here before," she insisted.

Then Unk-tay-hee wound his immense scaly tail (тогда Унк-тэй-хи обвил свой огромный/громадный чешуйчатый хвост; to wind; scale — чешуйка) about the giant pine (вокруг гигантской сосны) and tried to pull it out by the roots (и попытался вытащить ее у корней). The water foamed and boiled with his struggles (вода вспенилась и вскипела от его усилий), but He-who-was-first-Created stood firm (но Созданный Первым стоял крепко; to stand), and at last the monster gave up the attempt (и в конце концов чудище бросило попытку = сдалось; to give up — сдаться).
