And this is their custom (такой у них обычай) with all merchants (для всех купцов: «со всеми купцами») as long as they tarry in the city (пока они находятся в городе).

`And we tarried for a moon, and when the moon was waning, I wearied and wandered away through the streets of the city and came to the garden of its god. The priests in their yellow robes moved silently through the green trees, and on a pavement of black marble stood the rose-red house in which the god had his dwelling.

Its doors were of powdered lacquer (его двери были покрыты лаком/глазурью: «были из порошкообразной глазури»; to powder — превращать в порошок; присыпать порошком, powdered — порошкообразный; напудренный), and bulls and peacocks were wrought on them (и на них были выкованы /фигуры/ = они были украшены /фигурами/ быков и павлинов) in raised and polished gold (из рельефного и полированного/блестящего золота; to raise — поднимать). When the white doves flew past (когда мимо пролетали белые голуби; to fly (flew, flown)), they struck the bells with their wings (они задевали: «ударяли» колокольчики крыльями; to strike (struck; stricken)) and made them tinkle (и они звенели от этого); to make (made) smth. do smth. — вызывать что-либо, являться причиной чего-либо).

Its doors were of powdered lacquer, and bulls and peacocks were wrought on them in raised and polished gold. The tiled roof was of sea-green porcelain, and the jutting eaves were festooned with little bells. When the white doves flew past, they struck the bells with their wings and made them tinkle.

`In front of the temple (перед храмом) was a pool of clear water (был бассейн с прозрачной/чистой водой; pool — лужа, озеро; бассейн) paved with veined onyx (выложенный ониксом /с прожилками/; to pave — мостить, выстилать; vein — вена, жила, veined — жилистый; с прожилками). One of the priests came towards me (один из жрецов подошел

He had sandals on his feet (на его ногах были сандалии), one of soft serpent-skin (одна из мягкой змеиной кожи) and the other of birds' plumage (и другая из птичьих перьев). On his head was a mitre of black felt (на его голове была мирта из черного фетра) decorated with silver crescents (украшенная серебряными полумесяцами; to decorate — украшать, декорировать). Seven yellows were woven into his robe (семь желтых /узоров/ были вытканы на его одеянии; to weave (wove, woven) — ткать, плести, вплетать), and his frizzed hair (и его завитые волосы) was stained with antimony (были подкрашены сурьмой; to stain — пятнать; красить, окрашивать).

"`The god is hunting (бог охотится)," said the priest, looking strangely at me (странно глядя на меня) with his small slanting eyes (своими небольшими раскосыми глазами; slant — косо, наклонно, slant-eyed — с косым разрезом глаз, раскосый).

"`Tell me in what forest (скажи мне, в каком лесу /он охотится/), and I will ride with him (и я поскачу /на охоту/ вместе с ним)," I answered (ответила я).

`After a little while he spake to me, and asked me my desire. `I told him that my desire was to see the god.

"`The god is hunting," said the priest, looking strangely at me with his small slanting eyes.

"`Tell me in what forest, and I will ride with him," I answered.

`He combed out the soft fringes of his tunic (он расправил: «причесал» мягкую бахрому на своей тунике; to comb — чесать, расчесывать) with his long pointed nails (своими длинными, острыми ногтями; point — точка; кончик, острие, pointed — остроконечный; острый, заостренный). "The god is asleep (бог спит)," he murmured (сказал он тихо).

"`Tell me on what couch (скажи мне, на каком ложе: «кушетке/диване»), and I will watch by him (и я буду дежурить у его /постели/; to watch — наблюдать; стеречь, охранять)," I answered (ответила я).

"`The god is at the feast (божество на пиру = пирует)," he cried (вскричал он).

"`If the wine be sweet (если вино сладкое) I will drink it with him (я выпью его с ним), and if it be bitter (и если оно горькое) I will drink it with him also (я тоже выпью его с ним)," was my answer (был мой ответ).

`He combed out the soft fringes of his tunic with his long pointed nails. "The god is asleep," he murmured.

"`Tell me on what couch, and I will watch by him," I answered.

"`The god is at the feast," he cried.

"`If the wine be sweet I will drink it with him, and if it be bitter I will drink it with him also," was my answer.

`He bowed his head in wonder (он склонил свою голову в удивлении/изумлении; to bow — кланяться), and, taking me by the hand (и, взяв меня за руку), he raised me up (он поднял меня /на ноги/), and led me into the temple (и повел меня в храм; to lead (led)).
